Civil Engineering

Over the course of two to four years, you’ll learn that civil engineering is all about people. It’s about making public services and facilities better – and everyone’s everyday life easier. From rail networks to the Royal Navy, your work here will have a real impact on making our world safer, simpler and better connected.

Where you can join us

Places on our Civil Engineering graduate programme for Autumn 2018 are available within our Marine (Plymouth), Land and Nuclear sectors. But no matter which team you join, you could be based anywhere in the UK. That’s why we ask all our graduates to be flexible and willing to move during their programme.

What you'll be doing

The possibilities are many and varied. You may be helping to modernise the UK’s rail networks, or designing cutting-edge structures for the nuclear industry. We do a lot for the Ministry of Defence, which offers a whole world of different opportunities all by itself. You might even work with the Royal Navy to adapt the UK’s dockyard services to meet the demands of a modern naval fleet. Whatever you work on, you can be sure you’ll be making a real difference to everyday life in the UK.

What you'll get out of it

We’re passionate about learning. And we encourage our people to pursue accreditation with professional bodies – especially our engineers. We’ll support you on the road to Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status, and give you a competitive starting salary of £28k-£30k.* So after the programme you’ll be ready to take on your first permanent role as an engineer.

What you'll need

A 2:2 MEng (Hons) degree is vital. And because the programme is accredited by the IMechE, IET, RINA, IChemE, ICE and IOP, your degree will need to be accredited by the relevant institution too. You’ll also need to satisfy the MOD’s security requirements (and may need to complete a medical assessment). *Depending on location, role and qualifications.
