FAQs

From basic requirements to training programmes and social culture, find the answers to commonly asked Chartwell careers questions below.

What are the basic requirements for me to apply?

You must have the right to work in either the UK, EU or the USA, and be fluent in English, for the German office a working proficiency in German (B2 or above).

You must also have a strong academic record, ideally in a technical field of study, and be happy to spend Monday to Thursday away from home, most weeks.

Which offices are currently hiring and when would I start?

All four offices are open for applications – London, Berlin, Hamburg and Boston.

Analysts usually join in two intakes every year, either in August or January, and applications will be considered on a rolling basis.

I don't have the right to work in either the EU or the US - can you help me get a work permit?

In order to apply, you must have the permanent right to work in the UK, EU or the US.

Where do I need to be based to apply for this job?

The nature of the job requires commuting Monday to Thursday to the client site, and you will stay in a hotel during this time. Consequently, your location at the weekend can be flexible, so long as you may easily get to a large airport or train station to get to site. Being within commuting distance of our offices will make life easier when not on site.

Do you offer Internships?

Unfortunately, due to the urgent and confidential nature of our client work, we are unable to offer internships.

What is the training programme at Chartwell?

When you join us, you will have two weeks of initial training – one week to learn our core methodology and another at CATCH.

CATCH is a uniquely brilliant training opportunity, in which Chartwell takes over a fully functional chemical plant. The plant was purpose-built by a group of UK industrial companies to train employees in a real production environment without affecting their ongoing operations. You will spend a week on-site and work in teams to solve some complex technical problems in a full, real life factory simulation.

After the first two weeks, you will continue to receive regular training and development opportunities:

  • Every day that you are on-site will provide you with opportunities to hone your improvement skills, with support and coaching from your Line Manager.
  • Our training program continues throughout your career, and you can expect to take part in two Training Fridays each month through your first two years at Chartwell.
  • As you develop your experience, you will quickly have the opportunity to begin coaching other people on-site and delivering training in the office on Fridays.
How much opportunity is there to travel?

From all our European offices, you will have the chance to work all over Europe. Our Boston office typically has projects anywhere in the contiguous United States.

Whichever office you are based in, you will usually travel to the client site on a Monday and be home on a Thursday evening.

Moreover, there are further opportunities to work even further afield such as Canada or Australia.

What is the social culture like at Chartwell?

Chartwell has an enthusiastic ‘Ministry of Fun’ who organise frequent events such as axe-throwing, curling, and escape rooms. If you get an offer with us, you will be invited to one of our office days to meet the team and get involved in a fun event.

In addition to the ‘organised fun’ we are a fairly sociable group so normally a number of us head for a drink or dinner on a Friday evening after work.

What structures does Chartwell have for employee wellbeing?

Buddy System

Before joining, each new starter receives a buddy who is a junior member of the Chartwell team to answer any questions and make sure you are kept up to date with company news. Your buddy will keep up to date with your project and development for at least your first 6 months within the company.

Mentor System

After 6 months, you are assigned a mentor of your choosing within the Senior team at Chartwell. Casual meetings are held at least every 10 weeks and focus on your development and wellbeing.

Line Management

You will receive extensive day-to-day coaching and support from your line manager, and every consultant has weekly 1:1s for their personal development and project support. In each project, ‘Team Norms’ are discussed to agree between the team what activities, routines and priorities the team members have to ensure everyone gets the right work-life balance.

Peer-Support Groups

ChartwelLGBTQ+, ChartWomen and ChartEM run events throughout the year and are open to members throughout the organisation.

We have an open culture of feedback within Chartwell and encourage anyone to raise problems or improvements.

How much responsibility will I be given?

Typically, we have a team of 3-5 consultants on site. You will be given your own client team (which vary in size, dependent on the project) right from the start and will be achieving your own great results in no time which makes the job incredibly rewarding.

Do Chartwell employees specialise in an industry?

We are experts at the process of improvement and applying it in a structured and fast way into a wide range of industries and sectors. We regularly rotate staff for development and exposure to different industries and sectors.

What languages are required?

Fluency in English is required. For the Berlin and Hamburg offices a B2 or above level of German is required. Given the nature of our work, speaking any other languages is appreciated, though not essential.
