Manufacturing Engineers are responsible for supporting the manufacturing and construction teams to deliver to the best of their ability, helping to produce our cutting edge products in the most effective way, delivering to our customer at the highest quality, at the right time, within cost. As a graduate your enthusiasm will be put to good use, implementing the changes necessary to maintain the businesses reputation as a world class manufacturer.

What does the role entail?

As a graduate you will complete a number of individual placements of your choice within the manufacturing engineering team, which will give you a deep understanding of this essential discipline, projects could be:

  • Implement process improvements alongside the shop floor teams through root cause analysis and other lean manufacturing techniques
  • Developing facility layouts to maximise efficiency
  • Working with technical authors to write workmanship standards, process instructions etc.
  • Employing visual management

What you’ll need

To succeed in this area, you’ll need a minimum 2:1 Bachelor's degree for our graduate scheme or on course to achieving a 2:1 for our undergraduate schemes. Please refer to each business unit listed below for accepted degree subjects. In addition, you must be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve security clearance.

Qualifications aside, manufacturing engineers need to solve complex problems across a range of areas so it requires individuals who are resourceful and motivated, with good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in an analytical way, even under pressure. Where could you be?

Electronic Systems: You'll be joining our team and leveraging the expertise of 13,000 people around the world as we develop mission-critical electronic systems for a whole range of commercial and military purposes. This includes everything from flight and engine controls, surveillance and reconnaissance sensors, to electronic warfare and night visions systems. Preferred degrees include; Manufacturing or a Manufacturing related degree.

Military Air & Information: Our GDF programme is a 2 year a scheme commencing with an induction to the Graduate programme followed by 4 x 6 month placements. These are designed to develop your technical knowledge and skills and will be supported by relevant functional internal training. Placements may be based across a number of MAI locations including Warton and Samlesbury. Preferred degrees include; Manufacturing & Operations Management, Operations Management, Technology Management, Logistics Management, Manufacturing/Production Engineering, Aerospace Engineering Manufacturing Systems or Mechanical Engineering.

Submarines: Working with our team you'll join a group of experts who have been responsible for building every submarine currently in service with the Royal Navy. As a Manufacturing Engineering graduate you will deliver projects, benefits and improvements to the submarine build programme, which is vital for delivering our customer the products it expects at the right cost and quality. It is an exciting time for Manufacturing Engineering at Submarines because as the business grows, it means there are opportunities for graduates to grow with it. The skills in organising, assessing, improving, and interpersonal communication/management form a firm foundation from which career advancement can be built on. Many graduates find themselves moving onto senior positions within the business, in both technical and managerial capacities.

Maritime Services: As a Manufacturing Engineer within Maritime Services you will have the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of projects in the UK. We have teams working on the Royal Navy’s two new Aircraft Carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, which will be the backbone of the UK fleet for decades to come. We have also recently delivered the advanced Type 45 destroyers and our work is already underway on the Type 26 Global Combat Ship. Preferred degrees include; BEng/ MEng in Manufacturing Engineering and Mechanical Design, MEng in Manufacturing/ Technology or Operations Management or a STEM related degree subject.

This two year graduate scheme develops people who are passionate about and show great potential in their chosen field. Through a mix of study and on-the-job training in multiple placements, you’ll steadily acquire the skills and experience needed to become a professional engineer. Opportunities are currently available at Maritime Services - Portsmouth. You will receive a starting salary of £28,000 and while on the scheme you’ll be supported to work towards chartered engineer status with a relevant institution.
