About Us

Delivering safe, reliable electricity is at the core of what we do.

We’re the people who manage the electricity network that powers everyday life for more than 8 million people across 3.9 million homes and businesses in the North East, Yorkshire, and northern Lincolnshire.

Northern Powergrid - About Us
Find out how we power everyday life for millions of people across the North East, Yorkshire, and northern Lincolnshire.

Put simply, Northern Powergrid ensures electricity reaches our customers safely whenever they need it. As part of its customer service commitments, if power is ever interrupted - whether due to emergency maintenance or severe weather - Northern Powergrid is there to fix it 24/7, 365 days a year.

With a workforce of over 3,000 people, Northern Powergrid operates a network of more than 63,000 substations and some 60,000 miles of overhead power lines and underground cables spanning 9,650 square miles.

In an evolving energy industry, we also have a key role in creating and managing future energy systems that increasingly interact with our customers and smart, low carbon technologies.

That’s why we’re innovating and investing today, ensuring we’re ready to meet the demands of a net zero future and a greener energy system for tomorrow.

Our Vision

We are shaping the future of energy by delivering a smarter, more sustainable, and customer-focused electricity network. As the energy landscape evolves, we are committed to ensuring our network is ready to support new technologies, facilitate the transition to net zero, and provide a reliable power supply to the homes and businesses we serve.

Our vision is built around three key priorities:

  1. Enhancing network resilience: We are strengthening our grid to withstand extreme weather, cyber threats, and growing energy demands while keeping costs fair for customers.
  2. Accelerating decarbonisation: Our plan supports the UK’s net zero ambitions by reducing our own carbon footprint, enabling more low-carbon connections, and integrating renewable energy sources like wind and solar.
  3. Delivering outstanding customer service: We are committed to delivering exceptional customer experiences, expanding digital services, and achieving 90%+ customer satisfaction.

Our Future Business Plan

We are investing £2.7 billion between 2023 and 2028 to modernise our infrastructure, integrate renewable energy, and provide innovative services that make energy more accessible and efficient for all. Our plan ensures that we continue to power communities safely, affordably, and sustainably, now and for generations to come.

Our plan is based around four key outcomes:

  • Investing for the Energy Transition: We’re forecasting for future energy demand, unlocking network capacity through strategic, load-driven investment, and accelerating new connections that can power our region's decarbonisation journey and economic growth.
  • Responsible and Sustainable Business: We're committed to responding to our region's evolving energy needs, enhancing customer service, and making a positive impact on the communities we serve. We’re also advancing our environmental commitments to support a greener, more sustainable energy future.
  • Resilient Networks: We’re building a stronger, more resilient network - one that’s fit for the future. We’re investing in the long-term health of our assets, transforming our operations to manage a net zero power system, and to strengthen the resilience of our network, supply chain and workforce.
  • Smarter Networks: We’re creating a smarter network for the future through innovation, digitalisation, and our Distribution System Operator (DSO) role, driving our region’s decarbonisation journey.
