Our History

Our history is built on a legacy of powering homes, businesses, and communities across the North East, Yorkshire, and northern Lincolnshire. From our origins as regional electricity boards to becoming a key player in the UK's energy future, we have continuously evolved to deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable electricity.

  • 1948

The UK electricity industry was nationalised under the Electricity Act 1947, leading to the formation of regional electricity boards. The North Eastern Electricity Board was established to serve the North East, while the Yorkshire Electricity Board covered Yorkshire.

  • 1990

The UK government privatised the electricity industry, transforming regional electricity boards into private companies. Northern Electric and Yorkshire Electricity were created to serve their respective areas.

  • 1996

Northern Electric was acquired by CalEnergy, which formed CE Electric UK as a subsidiary to manage electricity distribution.

  • 2001

The two electricity companies were restructured:

    • Yorkshire Electricity became Yorkshire Electricity Distribution Limited.
    • Northern Electric became Northern Electric Distribution Limited.

Later, both were renamed under a single identity: Northern Powergrid.

  • Today

Northern Powergrid operates as one of the UK’s six Distribution Network Operators (DNOs). The company manages around 60,000 miles of power lines and 66,000 substations, delivering electricity to over 8 million people. It is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, with a commitment to reliability, sustainability, and innovation.

  • Future

Northern Powergrid is implementing a five-year plan based on customer and stakeholder input, focusing on:

    • Reducing power cut frequency by over 12% and shortening duration by 25%.
    • Accelerating connections by reducing waiting times by 20%.
    • Improving customer satisfaction to over 90%.
    • Strengthening network resilience and investing in decarbonisation efforts.

Northern Powergrid continues to evolve to meet the demands of a greener, smarter energy future.
