During my Geography degree, I gained an understanding of how physical environments are interconnected with human environments and the interplay between infrastructure and the natural world. This created transferable skills in which I would be able to apply to the construction world through a company like Costain. I also had a passion in sustainability which grew through University and when researching companies I would like to work for, Costain’s ESG reports and sustainability reports stood out for me.
I enjoy the diversity of the sectors within Costain and how dynamic the water sector is. I am able to meet different teams when I go to the different sites allowing me to get a good understanding of the different processes on site. One of the things I most enjoy about working at Costain is the networking opportunities. Since joining I have become part of the SHE Academy and the GRaAPS network, where I am able to meet other graduates in the company and create networks across the company. This also allows me to learn about the other sectors and look at potential other sectors I may be interested in working in, in the future.
I would say to not feel the need to rush into everything as learning takes time and you need to be able to accept that when you first start out you will not know everything. However, when working for Costain, they will help develop your skills and knowledge over the 2-year graduate scheme. Also to be proactive and to show initiative which also leads onto making sure you ask questions as it shows that you are engaging and interested.
