An industrial placement at Renishaw offers you the chance to learn more about the commercial functions within a global manufacturing organisation.

Our commercial based industrial placements are available in several disciplines:

  • Marketing
  • Communications
  • Sustainability
  • Business Systems
  • Each placement will involve working on live projects under the mentorship of our senior managers. As well as gaining hands on experience in your chosen field, you will have the opportunity to connect with people working in the business and discuss your career ambitions and ideas with employees in similar roles.  

What will I be doing?

Our Sustainability placements work on a variety of tasks that support Renishaw’s overall sustainability goals, including a commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 at the latest, with an ambition to bring this forward by 5-10 years. To achieve this, our Group Sustainability Team is being expanded to help transform our greenhouse gas emissions and approach to sustainability.

You will work closely with other members of the sustainability team and with stakeholders across the business to drive forward projects that help lower carbon emissions, measure and reduce the carbon footprint for individual products (lifecycle analysis) and progress our wider sustainable development goals (SDGs).

You will also support our corporate communications team to develop content that will educate and give progress updates for both internal and external audiences and maintain the sustainability sections of the company’s website and intranet site.

What will I gain?

Some of the key activities in this placement include:

  • Collaboration with different global business functions
  • Understanding of sustainability strategy within a FTSE250 organisation
  • Knowledge of Net Zero emissions including target setting and strategies to achieve those targets
  • Understanding of carbon lifecycle analysis
  • Understanding of the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs)
  • Communication activities involving internal and external stakeholders
  • Resource and time management
  • Experience using content management (CMS) and SharePoint systems
  • Working under pressure to strict deadlines

What skills and experience do I need?

Students applying for this position should have studied in/be studying disciplines in relevant subjects including sustainability, environmental management, environmental law, renewable energy and business management.

  • A passion for sustainability
  • Good inter-personal skills, with an ability to develop relationships across a large, complex organisation, and be able to work independently or as part of a team
  • High standard of verbal and written communications
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Collaborative, and keen to share information, knowledge and skills
  • Able to identify the goals of any project and work towards them
  • Prioritise and plan work effectively
  • Work under pressure when required and adhere to deadlines


This role is based at our New Mills site near Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire and you may on occasion be required to travel to other Renishaw sites for work. As Renishaw is based in a semi-rural location, it is essential that applicants have their own form of transport, or they are willing to relocate to the local area.

Renishaw operates hybrid working; it is likely that this role will be required to spend three days per week on-site.
