Interview Preparation

How to prepare for the Viridien One-way Video Interview

One-way video interviews can feel unnatural. You are talking to a screen, the clock is ticking, and there is no interviewer to read for feedback. At Viridien, we use this format to replace the traditional phone screen. Here are some tips as to what we are looking for and how to ensure you pass this stage.

  • Show Your Thought Process: We are not just looking for the right answer; we need to see how your brain works. If you calculate an answer, explain the steps aloud. This allows us to follow your logic, even if the final conclusion is slightly off.
  • Use Physical Props: This is a visual medium - use that to your advantage. Do not constrain yourself to just talking. If it is easier to illustrate an engineering or technical concept using a simple drawing (in thick black marker), a water bottle and a pencil, or other physical prop, hold it up to the camera.
  • Ditch the AI Scripts: Viridien does not use AI to evaluate your interview; real people review every submission. However, some candidates use AI to generate their answers, and it invariably backfires. Reading a script makes you sound robotic and hides the genuine enthusiasm and personality we are trying to assess.
  • Skip the Generic Research: We do not want to hear you recite our employee headcount or list our business divisions. We want specifics. Talk about your understanding of a recent technology we are using, a specific product we advertise, or a recent technical news item. These should be relevant to the role you are applying for.
  • Control Your Environment: Find a quiet place, disable notifications, check your laptop isn’t about to update. Prop your phone or laptop up securely and on a firm surface, do not hold it. Have a pen, paper, and calculator within reach, even simple mental arithmetic gets harder when the camera is rolling.

The time limits for each question are carefully calculated based on thousands of interviews we have conducted over the years. You have the exact amount of time needed to provide a comprehensive answer. Use your reading time to structure your thoughts, deliver your points clearly, and do not feel pressured to keep talking just to fill the clock once you have fully answered the question.
