Culture and Diversity

It’s our job to make content that informs, educates and entertains everyone. To do that, we need people working here who represent and reflect the diversity of everyone in the UK.

Miriam Barker: Diversity & Inclusion
For us, diversity isn't a strategy; it's an essential part of who we are.

Put simply; without people who can bring a diverse mix of ideas and experience, we couldn’t make the innovative and creative programmes our audiences want.

For us, diversity isn't a strategy; it's an essential part of who we are.

A big part of our working culture is creating a work environment where everyone feels heard, seen and supported no matter their background or experience.

We have a variety of programmes, networking groups and development opportunities that help drive our commitments to diversity and support our people.

Creative Diversity

The media industry is not changing fast enough. The BBC has been committed to creative diversity and inclusion for 100 years; but we now want to go further.

We’re setting out the first in a new series of bold steps to transform its programming and better represent the public it serves.

Development Programmes

We understand that developing your career isn’t just about specific skills for the job you are doing. It is also about growing in confidence, feeling inspired and having access to the tools and knowledge to take the next steps in your career.

We offer a range of tailored development programmes for our people with a focus on diversity. Such as our Hilda Matheson programme which is aimed at women trying to build their confidence, personal development and excel into leadership roles or our Senior Leadership Advisor groups who gain valuable insight into executive decision making at the BBC while also having influence and impact on major projects.

Employee Networks

At the BBC, we understand that supporting our people helps them feel valued while being part of something special. A big focus is providing the spaces and networks to empower our staff to bring their true selves to work every day no matter their background. Our staff networks are a big part of making all those who join us feel welcome at the BBC.

  • BBC Pride brings together people of all sexualities working at, or in partnership with the BBC.
  • BBC Ability provides support and a collective voice for disabled staff, helping the BBC become more disability confident.
  • BBC RAISED (Real Action In Social and Economic Diversity) is about promoting the interests of under-represented audiences and colleagues at the BBC.
  • BBC Embrace is a staff-led group providing peer support, networking opportunities and a focus for discussion of BAME related issues.
  • Young Talent Network connects young staff across the BBC through as they navigate the early stages of their careers.
  • GWiN (Global Women in News) is a networking and development group for BBC women working in news.
  • WiSTEM is a supportive community for women in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) roles across the BBC, improving life at work.
  • Women at the BBC support the career development, wellbeing and progression of women at the BBC.
