Graduate Software Engineer

What has it been like in your rotations so far. What’s your best piece of advice for new grads?

Both of my rotations I’ve been working with very smart people on interesting problems, ranging from how to store and search terabytes of data efficiently to how to stream videos into a front-end video player.

My best advice for new grads is to get stuck in! Everyone is so friendly and wants to help you learn that the best thing you can do is go for it and learn as much as you can by doing it. Everyone also likes to hear what you think about problems, especially as you will often be seeing things from a slightly different perspective.

What’s the most innovative/exciting thing you have done/worked on so far?

I worked on a new pipeline that processed all the data from events generated by analytics of the BBC website. Using distributed computing, this system has been designed to scale and has handled over a billion events a day. The pipeline was designed from scratch by my team and taught me a lot about big data and working at scale.

Have you been involved in any team events or extra scheme/BBC related activities whilst on the scheme?

I’ve taken part in a team hack-day and a grad scheme hack-day, both of which were great fun, and have gone for game nights with my team as well as drinks and team lunches for various occasions. I have also played touch rugby and gone for runs with my previous team.
