Hear from our Graduate Alumni

“As an engineering graduate, I considered opportunities across the energy sector, particularly renewable energy and electricity networks. I chose SSE because it offered the opportunity to work on some of the UK’s most important energy projects while gaining experience across different parts of the business through the graduate programme. The combination of technical development, structured rotations and mentorship made it the right place for me to start my career.”

Chisomnazu Umeh, Commissioning Support Engineer

“I had a really great experience on the graduate programme. My line manager was brilliant, and she had a clear plan for the two years I was on the graduate scheme so that I could experience different departments and roles. I was encouraged to ask questions and there really was no such thing as a silly question. My highlight was being asked to get involved with developing a project that was a new business venture. It gave me the chance to experience a project from the initial market research, technical exploration to the development of our proposition. Another highlight has been becoming a STEM ambassador. It can be difficult to understand what companies like SSE do and STEM is a great way not only to show this but to also encourage and excite youngsters about engineering. Plus, it is great fun and the questions from children are great. A group of 5-year-olds once told me that engineers are 'creative, clever and cool' which was a lovely compliment!”

Kate Wardle, Project Manager

“I felt that the graduate programme gave me a great basis to build my career at SSE. The nature of the graduate scheme being rotational means you get to know a lot of people throughout the company, as well as building a large network of fellow graduates. Having a wide knowledge of the business and its operations is super helpful in interviews if you want to develop your career in SSE. Rotating roles is also great for building lots of different skill sets that you never know when you may use in the future!”

Hannah Reilly, Employee Engagement Consultant

“I am now a Substation Engineer on projects and it’s been almost a year since I came off the scheme. The graduate programme gave me time to understand the process of flow of our work and how different teams collaborate to deliver a project. I am confident that I can find my way through reaching out to people from different teams if I need support in my day job.”

Carol Roy, Substation Engineer

“The graduate programme was a brilliant experience. I knew coming from university would give me the technical skill set required, but I lacked the real world experience of the role. The graduate scheme was an excellent soft launch into the business and provided the opportunity to get to know the business as a whole on a much more rounded level. I really enjoyed the opportunity to work with different teams and meet lots of people, alongside the training and development experiences offered. Every person I encountered was forthcoming in their help and advice, which allowed me to be curious, ask questions, and understand how each person approaches a task or problem. Throughout the scheme I made many connections that I still rely on today.”

Dom Sampays, Contracts Manager

“What attracted me to SSE was the opportunity to work in a business that provides critical infrastructure for everyday life while playing a major role in the UK's energy transition.”

Sophie Crump, Category Manager

“Since graduating from the programme, I have had several roles across the SSE Group. I first joined SSE Renewables as a Project Developer within the Solare & Battery team where my work focused on greenfield developments in the North of England. I then moved on to a role as a Business Analyst, in SSEN Transmission, allowing me to enhance my skills working with data. Recently I have moved across to Energy Solutions, working in the Business Energy team as a Commercial Analyst, I'm looking forward to continuing to advance my skills in Python and SQL analytics in this new role.”

Angus Mayall, Commercial Analyst

“The programme was great from settling in with the graduate cohort to visiting power stations across the country I had an excellent time learning and working on nationally significant, incredibly interesting projects. I also got to switch between teams which gave me a holistic understanding of how energy projects function from concept to decommissioning.”
