I studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham. During my studies I really enjoyed the electrical modules I was doing. These consisted of studies in power generation, distribution, and electrical design. As a result, I was looking for a career in the energy sector. I chose Perenco because they offer lucrative career opportunities for advancement. Perenco offers several incentives on top of what I was looking for as well as geographic flexibility to suit my needs. Perenco is willing to hire graduates and provide them with training to develop their careers. In other words, they are willing to invest in your career growth.
The highlights of my graduate scheme have been the ongoing learning and training. I’ve developed new skills which have undoubtably increased my skill set and overall productivity. During my first year I designed a power supply for the Lifeboat on Inde 23D and I installed battery backed emergency lights around several offshore platforms to comply with the relevant safety and performance standards. During my second year, I supervised the installation of solar panels with a combined installed DC power of around 200kW on three main stores buildings on-site at Wytch farm. Additionally, I designed and installed a charging point for an electric boat, on the slipway at Poole Harbour. For my ultimate year, I was the package responsible engineer for the Easington Rationalisation project which involved repurposing an unused ST2 local equipment room (LER) to be used at Easington Gas Terminal instead.
I’ve seen myself start at an entry-level and advance through the ranks whilst taking on even more roles and responsibilities. Due to the flexible working conditions available, I’ve been able to implement a good work-life balance. The availability of recreational activities such as football and gym memberships have helped me stay active. Travel opportunities have been highly possible since the company has offshore rigs and several locations onshore as well as some in different countries. I’ve been able to work on projects offshore as well as relocate to a different subsidiary (Wytch farm) as part of my second-year graduate scheme.
I’m excited for my future career development as there a variety of professional opportunities at my disposal. As an oil and gas industry, Perenco offers unique challenges and based on my current skills and workplace preferences. I have the geographic flexibility, to work anywhere I see fit. I aim to achieve chartership which is quite feasible with my current career trajectory. I’d recommend to graduates to seize every opportunity presented to you. Regardless of the field you choose within the energy sector. Perenco also offers a range of training and development opportunities.
