What made you decide to apply for a job at Dorset Software?

I was looking for somewhere to learn a variety of skills, and work with different people in different places. I thought consultancy would be a great place to start. I chose Software Development as my Masters dissertation had a code focused element and I enjoyed the problem solving and creativity that this provided. Dorset Software seemed like a great fit; their rigorous training scheme would provide a comprehensive skill set. Plus, seeing as they recruit STEM graduates, I expected to be surrounded by people with similar interests.

How did you find the application and recruitment process?

The whole process was simple, friendly and welcoming. The interview day gave an insight into life at Dorset Software and allowed me to assess whether it is somewhere I would be comfortable working. It felt like Dorset Software wanted to pitch themselves to you as much as you pitch yourself to them. That is not a very common approach to recruitment, but it ensures both parties are a good fit.

What was your training like?

The training was engaging, fast paced and enjoyable. The training activities were designed to mimic what it is really like to work with a client. This built non-technical skills and gave me experiences to draw upon to avoid future issues. I met a range of different technologies and quickly became proficient with the basics of several languages and paradigms. Programming is only one part of the training though; I was also introduced to Testing, Network and Infrastructure and Applications Engineering. These skills built me into a well-rounded individual who can fit whatever the job needs. It is also a big help to understand what other people in the client team or wider organisation do, as people often specialise in one of these areas. The training didn’t end after the first few months either. Alongside client work, I studied topics in more detail culminating in completing a qualification in Software Development.

What have you been working on recently?

I recently finished a stint at one of our largest clients in the automotive insurance industry, where I was a full stack developer in a team of Dorset Software employees. We were working on an online platform that enables the client to manage their claims process much more efficiently. Since finishing that, I have been writing training material, learning some different technologies and have completed an official certification in one of these. It's been a nice change of pace.

How have you found the cultural and social aspects of life at Dorset Software?

Everyone is very approachable; willing to help if you ask. One of the best things about Dorset Software is that you are part of a team. Everyone is working towards a common goal, and everyone supports each other. Outside of work, there’s a range of activities to get involved in, from pub trips to football. Many of these clubs come with enjoyable weekly emails. There are also special events, like a company-wide beach day. These activities are the perfect way to meet more like-minded people and feel a part of the company.

Any top tips for someone starting out at Dorset Software?

Learn from each mistake! You will make mistakes; it’s not an issue as long as you are honest and learn from them. Raising issues early means they can be fixed easily. Get involved with the activities, even if it is only once, it is the quickest way to meet people and feel a part of the community.
