Ed Jackson

Simulation Technician

Ed started off at the organisation via a summer internship. After a successful period, he moved to a full-time position at Royal HaskoningDHV. He is now a Simulation Technician at Twinn.

He works on producing valuable data to help clients justify their business decisions. With this data, he simulates models of real-world systems like autonomous mobile robots in a factory. Using cutting-edge technology, Ed helps clients create improved or new models.

Working on important projects

“At Twinn, we have long-standing relationships with our clients. They use our expertise to make models quicker, stronger and more realistic. I think it is very valuable to experience multiple projects. This experience has helped me to deliver informed advice on how to build models in an astute way.

In one project, I worked for a car engine manufacturer. This client was eager to introduce robots to its factory to optimise and automate their operational work. To actually introduce this, a lot of questions arose which were important to consider: Would having robots on the site improve the process or not? If yes, how many robots would be optimal? How many chargers were needed? It is vital to make validated predications before actually making investments.

I dived into our software WITNESS to create a model. I had to be flexible. Even though WITNESS has a wide range of built-in features, robots were yet to be built. This project was challenging yet very interesting and opens up inspiration for future work.”

A valuable player to other teams

“In my day-to-day work, I belong to a consultancy team of about 12-15 people. I consider my responsibilities as very diverse since I also support the sales team. In my team, we are using the product every day so we can give valuable input to them on how to present the product to the client. Additionally, I also have a lot of contact with the development team. Collecting customer feedback is crucial for them to develop the best software. In my position, I can be of great value to a range of teams.

As time progresses, we have also started to work more closely with the wider network of Royal HaskoningDHV. This enables diverse knowledge to be shared in a broad way.”

A lot of trust and learning opportunities

“One of the best things about working at Royal HaskoningDHV is the trust and confidence I get from the organisation. I graduated in July 2022 and I have already played a significant role on client-facing projects. It is a bit daunting of course, but I am very happy that the culture facilitates my growth. The company encourages taking the time to focus on personal and professional development, which is something that I value.

For example, we have several digital learning hubs. They serve as a knowledge provider and allow you to share experiences with each other. Examples of the hubs are data science, data engineering, scrum master, product owner and software engineering. In an ever-changing digital world, the need to learn is very important and I am happy the organisation facilitates this in a great manner. ”
