The AECOM team includes Civil Engineering specialists within our Building Engineering Business Line. We deliver creative infrastructure solutions for projects for government and private industry by providing input to projects ranging from highway schemes, regeneration projects, defence initiatives, education, healthcare, housing, aeronautical infrastructure to commercial developments.

We work for a range of private and public sector clients, most of whom return to us for our talent, expertise and track-record in delivering their requirements and exceeding their expectations.

About the role

We are currently seeking exceptional candidates for a Civil Engineering Apprentice/Trainee role within our Plymouth or Exeter office. This is a wonderful opportunity to join our growing design team receiving ‘on the job training’ working on a wide range of civil engineering projects across the region and beyond whilst being mentored and supported by experienced engineers to enhance career development during the apprenticeship period.

Successful applicants will continually develop their skills in civil engineering with the aim of becoming a world-class civil engineer and will be supported at university (usually on an agreed schedule of release with a recognised provider) in order to hone technical skills (ensuring real opportunities for personal growth and career progression). We also run a variety of in-house training sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Production of CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings
  • Preparation of simple civil engineering calculations
  • Supporting the administration of projects, including maintaining records
  • Assisting with data review and analysis
  • Ensuring outputs are accurate and meet the required standards
  • Meeting agreed deadlines
  • Working as a member of a team
  • Contributing to providing solutions to problems

Qualifications

No experience is necessary, but the position is ideally suited to school leavers at A level standard (or equivalent) or those that have completed a relevant Engineering qualification such as a HNC who can demonstrate:

  • Minimum of 3 A-Levels - 112 -128 UCAS points & above, including Mathematics and preferably a Science (Science includes: Biology/Human Biology; Chemistry; Computing; Design and Technology; Economics; Electronics; Environmental Studies; Geography; Geology; Life and Health Sciences; Physical Education; Physics; Psychology; Science (applied); Statistics)

OR

  • BTech Level 3 at DDM grade level & above ( 128 UCAS Points minimum) Subjects considered - Applied Science, Aeronautical Engineering, Building Services Engineering Construction and the Built Environment, Civil Engineering, Operations and Maintenance Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Sustainability.
  • Show an aptitude towards software-based engineering and drawing e.g. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other similar 3D software.
  • Demonstrate an interest in and a desire to pursue a career specifically within Civil Engineering.
  • Commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities.
  • Creative, practical, adaptable and enthusiastic.
  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organise parts of projects.
  • English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings and reports.

As mentioned, applicants must be willing to progress their career by undertaking a day release course at a Further Education Institution to study a Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship.

Your study will be funded, and you will earn an income as a permanent employee of AECOM. Subsequently the expectation is that you would go on to achieve Incorporated Engineer status as part of your career development.
