Job Description

AECOM is looking for talented and motivated graduates to join our Traffic Engineering teams across the UK and Ireland (UK&I). As one of the largest dedicated Traffic Engineering teams in the UK&I, we work on a diverse range of projects focused on creating safer, more efficient and sustainable transport networks for communities.

Our work covers the development and appraisal of practical solutions for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, including road and street design, traffic signals, cycle facilities, traffic management and traffic modelling. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and other technical professionals in multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative, cost-effective solutions for our clients.

Projects range from concept and preliminary design through to modelling, detailed design and implementation, giving you the opportunity to gain experience across the full project lifecycle. The role is fast-paced and collaborative, requiring creativity, technical capability, strong communication and a willingness to learn.

What You’ll Do

As a Graduate Traffic Engineer, you’ll be supported by experienced engineers who will provide guidance and mentoring as you develop your technical knowledge and professional skills. You’ll work on live projects and receive structured training to help you build a strong foundation in traffic engineering and design.

Your initial responsibilities will typically include supporting the development of designs and technical solutions through different project stages, attending site visits, meetings and workshops, and working collaboratively with clients and other design professionals.

You’ll receive training in relevant engineering, design and traffic modelling software, which may include AutoCAD, Civil 3D, LinSig, TRANSYT and VISSIM, depending on project requirements. You’ll also develop your understanding of digital engineering and BIM processes.

As your experience and confidence grow, you’ll take on increasing responsibility for project tasks and technical deliverables, with opportunities to contribute to projects from inception through to completion.

You may gain experience across a variety of projects, including:

  • Road and street design
  • Junction and intersection design
  • Cycle lane and active travel design
  • Bus priority and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) schemes
  • Streetscape and urban improvement projects
  • Traffic management planning and design
  • Traffic signal design
  • Traffic signage and road markings
  • Traffic modelling and microsimulation
  • Traffic impact assessments and transport assessments
  • Network analysis and optimisation
  • Feasibility studies and scheme development
  • Road safety assessments and audits

Our Traffic Engineering graduates also have opportunities to work alongside our Highways teams on major highways projects. Working collaboratively across Traffic Engineering and Highway disciplines provides exposure to a broad range of projects and helps you develop a well-rounded understanding of transportation and infrastructure design.

Qualifications

  • BEng in Civil Engineering, General Engineering or Geography, with a 2:1 (or equivalent) or above.
  • MEng in Civil Engineering or General Engineering, with a 2:1 (or equivalent) or above, would be advantageous.
  • MA/MSc in Geography, Transport Planning or a related discipline would be advantageous.
  • A relevant Master’s degree in Mathematics or another quantitative discipline would also be considered.
  • Genuine interest in traffic engineering, transport and the development of safe, efficient and sustainable transport networks.
  • Strong analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret and evaluate technical information.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Good technical and report-writing skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to structure and prioritise work effectively while contributing to the wider team.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, demonstrating initiative, focus and a willingness to learn.
  • Enthusiastic, technically minded and motivated, with ambition and drive.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
