Mechanical Design Engineer for LHCb

Mechanical Engineering.

About us

At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job description

You will join the LHCb Technical Coordination section of the LHCb group. You will be part of the LHCb design office, contributing to the CAD modelling of the LHCb detector and helping to develop LHCb digital mock-up and digital twin methodologies that will support installation planning, maintenance, and operation for the next milestones of the experiment.

Your responsibilities

  • Contribute to the conceptual design and development of mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with physicists, engineers, and technicians to translate conceptual requirements into practical engineering solutions.
  • Produce engineering documentation, technical specifications, 3D models, and manufacturing drawings.
  • Support the manufacturing, assembly, testing, and installation of equipment.

Your profile

  • Initial experience in designing mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD software.
  • Knowledge of CATIA V5, PDM/PLM environments, or structured engineering data management; familiarity with these tools is considered an advantage.
  • Exposure to the machining of parts, assembly, and testing of mechanical systems is considered an advantage.
  • Familiarity with 3D scanning, reverse engineering, or digital twin concepts is considered an advantage.

Skills

Mandatory:

  • Ability to work effectively in an international, multidisciplinary team with physicists, engineers, and technicians.
  • 3D CAD modelling and 2D drafting skills, preferably using CATIA V5 (or an equivalent CAD system, with a willingness to learn CATIA).
  • Good knowledge of mechanical drawing standards, dimensioning and tolerancing (ISO GPS), materials, and manufacturing processes.

Optional:

  • Basic programming skills, ideally in JavaScript and/or Python.
  • Interest in or experience with 3D web visualisation technologies (e.g. Three.js, WebGL, and the glTF format).

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.

Eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • Radiation worker, category A.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain conditions.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

What we offer

  • A monthly net stipend of either 5,266 or 5,793 Swiss Francs per month depending on your degree.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure.
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health insurance scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Family, child and infant monthly allowances depending on your individual circumstances.
  • A relocation package (installation grant and travel expenses) depending on your individual circumstances.
  • Possibility to extend your contract up to 36 months.
  • On-the-job and formal training including language classes.
