Full-Stack Software Developer (Java React)

Electrical, Computing, Software, Web Development.

About us

At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job description

CERN's Engineering Information Management group is looking for a Full-Stack Developer to join our dynamic development team. This role involves designing, developing, and maintaining software solutions that support engineering and information management processes.

Our applications play a critical role at CERN, enabling domain experts to evaluate intervention risks and grant access to our facilities. Approximately 600 such activities are declared every week, granting daily access to thousands of people who rely on our work for their safety.

The applications are built on a modern stack, including React, Java Spring Boot, Oracle, and BPMN. We are a small, focused team working with Agile processes that prioritise quality team communication and strong engagement with our users.

If you're passionate about software development and eager to work in a world-class research environment, we'd love to hear from you!

Your responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain applications using Java, React, and Oracle technologies.
  • Collaborate with engineers and IT specialists to gather requirements and implement solutions.
  • Ensure software quality through testing, debugging, and performance optimisation.
  • Participate in Agile development practices within a fast-paced team.

Your profile

  • Experience developing Web Applications using modern front-end technologies (React, Angular, Vue JS) and Java back-end.

Skills

  • Familiarity with Java, React, and Oracle databases.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to learning.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, international environment.
  • Desire to learn processes specific to CERN (Safety, Access, ...).
  • Experience with Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is a plus.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

What we offer

  • A monthly net stipend of either 5,266 or 5,793 Swiss Francs per month depending on your degree.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure.
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health insurance scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Family, child and infant monthly allowances depending on your individual circumstances.
  • A relocation package (installation grant and travel expenses) depending on your individual circumstances.
  • Possibility to extend your contract up to 36 months.
  • On-the-job and formal training including language classes.
