Applications can be addressed to one of the following options: Graduate Recruitment, Human Resources or Rute de Oliveira (HR Officer).

Applicants should explain why they want to become a Trainee Patent Attorney and wish to be considered for employment at Carpmaels & Ransford.

The application window normally runs from July to early November for positions to start in September the following year.

Interviews normally take place between December and January each year.

There will be pre-interview exercises including a sample of technical written work.

First interview:

  • Formal interview typically with two interviewers from the relevant practice area
  • Informal chat with fee earners from the relevant practice area
  • Written exercises

Second interview:

  • Formal panel interview

Applicants may not receive an outcome of their applications until the end of January.

All applications that meet the academic criteria (or equivalent) will be considered.

We do not currently hold a sponsorship licence to employ non-EU applicants however, one will be sought if the need arises.

At present, it is unclear how Brexit will impact recruitment for non-British citizens. We will endeavour to support applicants as much as possible.

  • In-house, comprehensive trainee tutorial programme (over the first six months of employment) to give our trainees a thorough grounding in the key essentials
  • Queen Mary University: Certificate in Intellectual Property Law
  • In-house, comprehensive intermediate tutorial programme
  • Pre-EQE exam (includes in-house study group for exam preparation)
  • UK Finals (external training and in-house study group for exam preparation)
  • EQE Finals (in-house study group for exam preparation)
  • Advocacy training (after qualification)
