How to apply

At BDO, we’re looking for strikingly different people to work with us and our clients. Whatever your background, you could be absolutely right for BDO.

We recognise that your qualifications and work experience don’t tell us your full story. This is why our entire recruitment process follows a strength based approach, so we can find out what you care about and what you enjoy doing. These are your strengths and they paint us a bigger picture about you and your suitability to join us.

To really stand out in your application, we recommend taking the time to learn more about us, checking out the roles available and whether you see yourself thriving within them.

We're looking for strikingly different people.

All candidates must apply online to the specific role of their choice and can only apply to one role at a time. Candidates need to demonstrate a deep understanding of the role they’re applying for including the professional qualification they are interested in studying.

Applying online

What we want to know

We’ll ask you about your academic background, work experience and extracurricular activities. This is an important opportunity for us to learn more about you, what makes you tick, and whether you’re right for BDO. As part of your application process, take the time to reflect upon your strengths and what you can bring to the company. And when answering questions, share any information you want us to know, but don’t exaggerate, keep everything factual.

Remember to ‘Save as draft’ as you work through your application and review before you submit, as you won’t be able to make changes afterward. Once submitted, we’ll send you an email to let you know we’ve received it. You can then track your application by logging back into the system at any time.

Tips for applying online:

A great application that helps you stand out from the crowd takes time, energy and thought. The key to success lies in preparation and careful research into the role. You should take the time to consider your own skills.

Consider the role you are applying for and make the right choice for you. Here are some common-sense points to consider when completing your online application:

  • answer each question fully and correctly. Present clear evidence that you have the kind of qualities and skills we’re looking for.
  • we’re interested in what you’ve done, but even more interested in what you do well and enjoy doing.
  • reflect and amend any answers if necessary before completing the more detailed questions online.
  • keep to the suggested word limits. Accurate, concise answers are generally better received.
  • save your application regularly – you don’t have to complete it all at once.
  • check grammar and spelling, and get someone else to proof-read your application.
  • print a copy of your application – in case you need to refer to it again.

Online ability tests

After we’ve read your application form, if you meet our criteria, we’ll invite you to complete some situational strength, numerical and critical reasoning online tests. You can practice ahead and learn how to prepare for this strengths-based assessment, by completing some practice ability tests beforehand.

We’ll send an email to the address you supplied with your application for when you can take our online reasoning tests. So keep an eye on your inbox. Then once you have completed the tests you’ll receive a feedback report on your performance.

Tips for our online tests:

  • make sure you’re relaxed and ready before you start the test.
  • find somewhere quiet, where you can concentrate and won’t be interrupted.
  • our reasoning tests are time-recorded, rather than time limited. So don’t feel rushed when answering questions. But as a rough idea, allow up to 30 minutes to complete each test.

Please note: you may be chosen to be part of a random selection of applicants to be re-tested at a later stage of your assessment process.

Video Interviews

Video Interviews

The video interview is your chance to tell us more about you and help us decide whether you have what it takes to be successful at BDO.

Don’t worry if you haven’t done anything like this before. The system will take you through each stage of the process, and you’ll be able to answer a test question before you begin the interview itself.

The interview will be strengths-based. We’ll be looking for evidence of what you do well and enjoy doing, to make sure you are a good fit for BDO. This is your opportunity to decide whether BDO is also the right fit for you, so you should also reflect upon whether you want to work for us. This isn’t just about us finding the right candidates for our organisation, but about you finding the right employer for yourself.

Interview tips:

  • the video interview lasts up to 30 minutes – so please ensure that you are somewhere quiet and won’t be interrupted during this time.
  • be yourself! We want to get to know the real you. Relax and answer the questions as honestly and openly as you can speak clearly and concisely, sharing as much information as you wish.
  • read the question carefully. The candidates that perform the best are careful about responding to the question asked – rather than giving an answer they may have pre-prepared, but is not relevant to the question. And as with all interviews, you won’t be allowed to go back and change your responses.
  • we recommend taking the video interview at a time of day when you are feeling at your best and most relaxed. This will be reviewed by a member of our team at a later stage.

Assessment Day

Assessment Day

Our Assessment Day has been developed to give you additional insight into the graduate roles at BDO. The assessment day could be with up to 10 other candidates who are being assessed against various roles. We’ll give you the exact timings and location well in advance, so you’ll be able to make travel arrangements.

What the day involves

You’ll be asked to take part in a continuous assessment with some key objectives to achieve by the end of the day. We’ll share with you the specific details of the tasks and objectives while you’re there, so there’s no need to prepare anything in advance. Some of the tasks include:

  • Group Exercise
  • Individual Presentation
  • Final Interview
  • Written Exercise.

The most important thing you can do is, be yourself, get involved in the tasks, and take the time to work out if BDO is right for you. In addition to the assessed components of the day we’ll also provide you with additional information about BDO and the programmes you have applied to.

Get to know us over lunch

During your assessment day, lunch will be provided. This is a good opportunity to talk to some of our existing Trainees and learn more about what life is really like at BDO from those who are doing the role you could be doing in the future.

Before attending the assessment day:

  • Check your travel options and know where you’re going, so you arrive on time.
  • Think about your personal strengths and areas for development, i.e. what are the things you do that energise you the most? And do you think developing these will support you in the role you have applied for at BDO?
  • Learn more about strengths-based assessment and your own strengths.
  • Finally, remember that whatever the outcome, your assessment day is a valuable learning experience. Even if you’re unsuccessful in securing a role at BDO on this occasion, we’ll provide you with valuable feedback to help you improve on your performance in the future. We want you to succeed as much as you do.
