Operations Safety Industrial Placement

What is NATS?

NATS is the UK’s leading Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP). Every year we handle 2.5 million flights and keep 300 million passengers safe whilst in UK airspace. We provide air traffic management (ATM) services to 15 airports in the UK as well as providing these services around the world spanning Europe, Middle East, Asia and North America.

What we do
We do everything we can to keep NATS running safely

We’re shaping the future of ATM through our focus on ‘advancing aviation and keeping the skies safe’ and believe that the size and diversity of our business makes us an exciting choice for undergraduates considering their future careers.

What will the Operations Safety & Assurance Industrial Placement involve?

This one-year placement will be based at our Swanwick Centre in Hampshire, where the equipment needed for the role is located.

You’ll join the Operations Safety & Assurance team, which helps NATS understand current safety performance and provides assurance that our air traffic services remain safe as operations develop. Its work covers investigations, future methods, and compliance with regulations and standards.

Your placement will focus on two areas:

  • Safety Performance: Analyse and report on operational data to help teams understand current safety performance and progress against our safety targets.
  • Safety Support Media: Help produce copies, extracts and replays of air traffic control recordings from our operational archive. These provide evidence for formal safety investigations and support safety improvements.

You’ll work closely with internal customers across Swanwick, Prestwick and Military operations, as well as authorised external partners such as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and airline operators.

Why choose NATS?

You’ll join a community of graduates, placement students and experienced professionals, gaining insight into aviation while contributing to work that supports operational safety.

We’re committed to your personal and professional development. With support from our skilled colleagues, you’ll apply your university learning, develop practical analytical skills and grow in confidence throughout the placement.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for driven, proactive and committed individuals who are ready to embrace the challenging targets we’ve set ourselves over the next few years. One thing is clear: we can only achieve these targets through our people. We’ll be leading the way technically, operationally, commercially and politically, and you can help us shape the future.

You’ll need to be studying towards a degree that allows you to complete a 12-month industrial placement as part of your course.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys working on varied activities within a team and has an interest in aviation safety. You should be able to:

  • work carefully and pay attention to detail
  • interpret numerical and written information
  • work collaboratively with colleagues and customers
  • learn how to communicate operational trends clearly to different audiences

Experience using Microsoft 365, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, would be helpful.

To be eligible to apply, you must have indefinite, unrestricted right to work in the UK. Unfortunately, we cannot consider candidates whose right to work is time-limited or dependent on visa sponsorship.

You must be able to obtain Security Clearance (SC Level).
