Join the Metallic Machining Department as we take on the challenge of Formula One’s exciting new era of sustainable technical regulations.

By spending your year in industry with us, you will:

  • Apply your learning in one of the most technically demanding global sports.
  • Take on responsibility as you are supported and trained throughout your year.
  • Join us for a year-long placement from the end of June 2027 to the end of July 2028.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment at our state-of-the-art factory in Brackley.
  • Be an integral part of a cohort of students working across all functions of our team.

Metallic Machining Industrial Placement

As an Industrial Placement in Metallic Machining, you will support the production of critical metallic components for our race car and wind tunnel programmes, working in a live Formula One manufacturing environment where quality, speed and precision all matter.

You’ll gain exposure to high-precision parts including gearbox casings, suspension uprights, axles, aero structures and 60% scale model components, while seeing how machining processes, planning, inspection and problem solving come together across both our race car and aero machine shops.

This is real project work, not shadowing. Your contribution will support manufacturing for the race car and wind tunnel programmes, with visible impact on quality, throughput and manufacturing performance. You’ll be encouraged to ask questions, challenge processes and help turn ideas into practical improvements. You’ll be coached by Managers, Team Leaders and Production Engineers while contributing to improvement projects focused on throughput, non-conformance reduction, automation and shop-floor data visibility. Over the year, you’ll build confidence in applying problem solving to real manufacturing challenges. You’ll also work with teams across manufacturing, quality, design, build and aero operations, giving you a broader understanding of how machining decisions influence car development and performance.

About You

Essential:

  • Have a strong interest in manufacturing processes, production engineering and automation.
  • Be passionate about engineering problem solving and continuous improvement.
  • Have solid academic performance in an engineering-related degree.
  • Have at least one year remaining on your course, or be enrolled on your next course*, when the placement starts.
  • Bring a reflective, detail-oriented mindset with good judgement.
  • Be confident sharing ideas, collaborating with others and working independently on technical challenges.

Key Skills You Could Gain From Your Placement

What Your Year Will Look Like:

  • Early induction and training to understand our processes, systems, safety standards and machining environment.
  • Hands-on exposure to both the race car and aero machine shops, including production, planning and costing activities.
  • Ownership of improvement projects supporting quality, throughput, automation, reporting and shop-floor performance.
  • Regular coaching and feedback from experienced engineers, team leaders and managers.
  • A final project presentation and handover, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate the impact of your work.

What You Will Learn:

  • Production engineering experience in a high-performance manufacturing environment.
  • Practical understanding of precision metallic component manufacture, from CAD and CAM through to machining and final inspection.
  • Process development experience across both full-size race car and aero metallic components.
  • Continuous improvement and root cause analysis skills linked to quality, efficiency and operational performance.
  • Data and automation skills that improve visibility, reduce manual input and support better production decisions.
  • Cross-functional communication experience with engineering, quality, manufacturing and operations teams.
  • Exposure to the pace, standards and problem-solving culture of Formula One manufacturing.
