What you will do: 

An opportunity exists for talented undergraduates with a passion for communications to play a significant role in supporting internal and/or external communications at one of our world class pharmaceutical sites. Working alongside a small team of on-site and off-site communications specialists, you will gain experience of how effective communications contribute to the success of a world leading pharmaceutical manufacturing site.

The role may include: 

  • Keeping employees at all levels informed of change, performance and progress at the site 
  • Being involved in delivering the site’s communications strategy 
  • Organising town halls, site conferences and specific campaigns  
  • Writing, designing and giving presentations 
  • Drafting news stories, case studies and features for internal and external communications channels from digital to print. 
  • Preparing materials from posters to videos  
  • Creating clear and consistent messages using multiple communication platforms.  
  • Embedding the culture, mindset and behaviours demanded by our values  
  • Sharing and celebrating our successes.   
  • Interacting with different levels of the business to ensure the appropriate approach is taken to engage staff across all functions 
  • Utilising a range of digital and physical materials in a number of different channels and platforms.  

This office-based placement will suit students looking to gain broad experience and exposure to multiple business areas. It is perfect for students looking for experience in business/communications but it also suitable for students who have experience in written and video communication in different forms (e.g. university newspapers, video editing experience). Communications is an important function for businesses across the world, therefore this placement gives excellent experience for a variety of future roles and opportunities. 

You will be applying the skills you already have learnt and developing new skills such as team working, effective communication and time management. You will work with, and learn from, an experienced team. They will coach and mentor you during your year to help you achieve your potential. 

Locations & Roles: 


PSC Ware is a New Product Introduction facility for both Oral Solid Dose (HIV and oncology) and Respiratory medicines, and a global supply site for Ellipta inhalers, tablets and micronised active pharmaceutical ingredients. We supply to over 140 countries around the world and deliver to over 75,000 clinical trial patients every month. 

A Communications placement at Ware will give the successful candidate the opportunity to participate in a range of practical communications programmes, supporting our site’s engagement and culture priorities. Working closely with our site communications lead, you’ll quickly develop an awareness of the day-to-day challenges and deliverables of a pharma manufacturing facility. Using your people-facing skills, you will communicate information and engage site employees in our fundamentals of safety, sustainability and quality culture, as well as our approach to continuous improvement. 

This placement offers the chance to gain a deep understanding of both digital and non-digital communications channels and learn to deliver internal communications to employees using a variety of approaches, e.g. videos and multimedia packages through to print materials and face-to-face briefing packs. In addition, you will work to continuously improve the reach and impact of our communications, analysing data about our digital channels as well as qualitative feedback. 

Our Ware site is located less than a mile from the station, with regular rail links through to London Liverpool Street, taking around 45 minutes. 


The Worthing site manufactures more than 33 million packs of antibiotics each year, and our 60-year legacy has seen generations of talented people proudly producing our high-quality medicines for patients around the globe. 

A Communications placement at Worthing will give the successful candidate the opportunity to experience hands-on practical communications techniques, supporting our site’s culture and engagement priorities. As well as the considerable ‘people-facing’ elements of this role, there is also an opportunity to gain awareness of the day to day challenges and deliverables of a pharma manufacturing facility, including engaging everyone in our safety and quality culture and our approach to continuous improvement. 

This placement offers the chance to gain a deep understanding of our channel strategy, learning to deliver internal communications to employees using a variety of channels and approaches, from digital and media-based campaigns, to physical materials and face-to-face briefing packs. They’ll work closely with our small site team to continuously improve the reach and echo of our communications, analysing data about our digital channels as well as taking qualitative feedback. 

The Worthing site is situated approximately 2 miles from the South Coast and located at the foot of the picturesque South Downs; We are also only 15 miles from the cosmopolitan and cultural city of Brighton and Hove. Worthing boasts the opportunity to combine city, countryside and coast all in one location, and even offers rail links to London in under 90 minutes. 

Degree requirements:

  • Communications, Business, Sociology, Psychology, English or HR, or a media related discipline. 
  • You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You will be expected to provide evidence from your university to show you will be an undergraduate student for the duration of the placement year 

You’ll need: 

  • To be a creative and outgoing individual with a curious and enquiring mind 
  • Tenacious and persuasive 
  • An ability to develop rapport and build relationships with people at all levels. 
  • To demonstrate qualities aligned with our GSK Values and Expectations. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages and SharePoint  
  • Experience of creating engaging communications materials – print and digital - would be beneficial 
  • Experience in the use of digital communications, e.g. Photoshop, PowerPoint and video editing, would be beneficial 
  • Individuals with the creative flair to design innovative communications for internal employees and external stakeholders.   
  • An interest in business operations and communications 


  • A salary of £21,000, plus a bonus
