A GSK apprenticeship gives you the chance to earn while you learn. This In Vivo In Vitro (IVIVT) Laboratory Science (Biology) apprenticeship lasts up to 4 years and is a practical, hands-on apprenticeship. You will be working within a laboratory where you will learn how to operate the systems and equipment that generates data to aid in the production of life saving pharmaceutical products for our patients.

We are looking for motivated individuals with a willingness and enthusiasm to learn, who are excited to develop practical and problems solving skills. No prior experience is required as you will be given full training.

You will be studying for a BSc (Hons) in Bioscience. If you successfully complete your apprenticeship and demonstrate the qualities we are looking for, you may be offered the opportunity to go on to further education.

On our 4-year programme you’ll receive tailored on-the-job training from industry experts from day one combined with early responsibility to help you to develop and progress.

If you are offered a role; you will have a buddy or a mentor who will help you to prepare for joining GSK and will be there to offer support and guidance throughout your apprenticeship.

Education required:   

GCSE Mathematics and English Language (grade A*-C / 9-4) or equivalent
Must have/ be predicted 104 UCAS points at A-level (grades BCC), with one being Biology or an equivalent scientific discipline.

Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Expected Start date: September 2023

You will be part of the Research & Development (R&D) function based at Stevenage. Your apprenticeship will be in one of our cutting-edge teams, based at our R&D site in Stevenage.

You’ll be excited by the thought of:

  • Building your In-Vitro laboratory skills in an R&D setting
  • Working as part of a team of scientists
  • Studying towards your BSc (Hons) in Bioscience

What will you do?

  • Perform in vitro work within an IVIVT laboratory (e.g. Dispensary formulation and analysis, a Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) or Investigative Safety) or assess molecule safety via computational science approaches.
  • Whilst not working directly with animals, an individual in this role would need to be open to working with samples from in vivo animal studies and to build knowledge of the range of animal models used within Pharma research
  • Undertake training on various state-of-the-art techniques and technology (e.g., High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Flow Cytometry, robotics, complex in vitro models and cellular imaging, QPCR or modelling software) to use in experimental or computational studies.
  • Review relevant literature and application of this knowledge to aid problem solving as part of your experimental work
  • Gain insight into a broad range of scientific disciplines (e.g., formulation, analytical, mechanistic safety) critical to the drug discovery and development process.
  • Support GSKs portfolio of ongoing projects that will eventually lead to the development of medicines for patients. Use of a range of IT systems such Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint), bespoke scientific software (Empower, Analyst, FlowJo) and data capturing systems (Electronic Lab Notebooks ELN) to interpret, record and report data.
  • Develop your ability to integrate and interpret complex data sets, and reporting of those findings
