Apprentice, Learning and Development

Tell us about your role at ASMPT.

I am a Learning and Development apprentice which means I am responsible for developing training curriculum/materials, selecting appropriate delivery mechanisms, delivering training, and monitoring training effectiveness for the general workforce and for targeted discipline/technical areas.

Tell us about your career progression timeline. Including when you started, and how long you've been at ASMPT.

I started in August 2022 as a student in the Customer Relationship Management team, developing training material for customers. The job was only for a year, but I really wanted to stay at ASMPT so looked for jobs in other teams, this is when a Human Resources Learning and Development Apprentice came up after 8 months of being at ASMPT. I applied for the job and got it, and moved teams in April 2023. I have now been at ASMPT for almost 2 years, and I am currently doing a year apprenticeship to get my level 3 qualification, and will be doing 3 more years to get my level 5 qualification.

What is your favourite part of working at ASMPT? And what do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the atmosphere and have a great team that support me in my role, I enjoy coming to work and having my own projects to look after.

How much responsibility are you given in your role as a placement/apprentice student?

I have my own projects that I have full control over but also regular check ins with my manager to make sure I'm on the right track and happy with how these projects are running. I like the amount of responsibility I have but can also ask for help when needed.

Do you feel your experience will improve your graduate prospects?

Yes - Coming into ASMPT I didn't know what I wanted to do going forward but now I have a good plan and I am working towards my qualifications.

How does ASMPT provide a warm friendly culture?

I think ASMPT has a very friendly culture, doing things like BBQ’s, quiz nights, summer parties. Not many companies do things like this. I like seeing my colleagues outside of work too, I’ve made some of my best friends here.

How have you found it settling into the company and the role?

The first week is a lot to take in but once you get to know your team and get involved, it's easy to settle in. Getting involved in as many things as you can helps with making friends and getting known.

What have you gained from working at ASMPT?

Not only have I gained technical skills, but I have also gained a lot of personal skills like asking the right questions, how to have difficult conversations etc. I have developed my social skills by working here which also helps in my apprenticeship.

What other opportunities have you got to experience? (For example SSC, Environmental group, sports activities etc.)

I am part of the Sports and Social Club which allows me to get myself out there and talk to new people, I enjoy being part of this club because it doesn't feel like work - Planning summer parties, hosting games nights etc.

What was your experience like living in Weymouth?

I enjoy living in Weymouth as there's always something going on, especially in summer. I think it's great that we can just go to the beach after work, paddleboarding is right on our doorstep.
