For over 160 years, Transport for London (TfL) and its predecessor organisations have kept the capital moving. Innovation has always been at the heart of our mission — from pioneering transport technologies to delivering services that support over 1.65 billion journeys each year.
Our Technology Team plays a critical role in enabling this. Whether it’s rolling out 5G connectivity across the Tube, powering real-time journey planning through the TfL Go app, or maintaining radio communications across London’s 9,000-strong bus fleet — we deliver the digital infrastructure that keeps London working, moving, and thriving.
We’re excited to launch the second year of our Product Manager Graduate Scheme, designed to develop the next generation of product leaders who will shape the future of transport technology in London.
As a Graduate Product Manager, you’ll be working at the intersection of business strategy, user experience, and technology delivery — gaining hands-on experience in one of the most dynamic roles in tech today.
Over two years, you’ll complete up to four placements (each lasting around 6 months) in different teams, giving you broad exposure across the Technology department and the role of a product manager. Alongside this there will be structured training and learning to help you grow in the role.
The teams you could be in working might include:
Your first-year placements will be pre-assigned to ensure a strong foundation. In your second year, you’ll have the flexibility to tailor your experience based on your interests, strengths, and career aspirations.
Here’s an idea of what some different placements in different teams could look like over the course of the graduate scheme:
The Digital team is responsible for TfL’s customer-facing digital experiences across our websites and apps. In this team, you might help define and prioritise the next set of features for TfL Go, our travel app for Londoners that assists them in planning journeys and checking the TfL network status. For instance, you could conduct research to determine how to enhance features that make it easier for cyclists to navigate London and then collaborate with designers and engineers to bring these enhancements to life in TfL Go.
T&D Payments manage the payment and ticketing systems at TfL, undertaking a variety of high-profile programmes to improve and expand the TfL payment and ticketing system. This placement could position you as one of our Contactless Payment Product Managers. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of projects, including:
Additionally, you’ll have the chance to present and chair meetings with the senior leadership team, as well as attend ticketing and future payment networking events.
Transport Services are responsible for the services used by our customers and operational staff. In this role, you would work on products that support many of our operational processes, which are crucial for keeping the transport system running and ensuring the safety of our staff and customers.
This could involve:
Whatever your aspirations, we’ll work with you to align your passions and enthusiasm with opportunities within the Technology department. The Product Manager Graduate Scheme will help you develop a broad foundation of product management skills, which are valuable for a wide range of roles beyond Product Management as well.
London/Hybrid - Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a four-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.
Upon completion of the Product Manager Graduate Scheme, you could become a:
Over time you could progress to a Senior Product Manager.
The Product Manager Graduate Scheme is designed to build a strong foundation for a career in technology, product, and business leadership — both within TfL and beyond. You’ll develop a versatile skill set that’s highly valued across industries:
TfL is a large and diverse organisation offering a wide range of career paths. The breadth of experience you’ll gain through the graduate scheme opens opportunities across the Technology department and beyond. Whether you choose to specialise in product, pivot into strategy, or explore leadership roles, you’ll be well-positioned to progress over the next 5–10 years.
Our award-winning teams will support your ongoing development, through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements.
We’ll support your technical development through practical training with our industry leading experts. There will also be the opportunity for training in topics such as presentations skills and project management. We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and aim to reflect the diverse communities we serve. We believe that a diverse workforce enables us to deliver better services and outcomes. Our goal is to make our recruitment as inclusive as possible. As a Disability Confident Leader, we actively encourage applications from disabled people.
As part of the Disability Confident scheme, we aim to offer an assessment or interview to candidates who apply via the scheme where the minimum essential criteria for skills, knowledge and experience has been met. In some circumstances, it may not be practical to offer an interview or assessment to every candidate who applies through the scheme and meet the minimum essential criteria; in these situations, we select candidates who best meet the minimum criteria for the job rather than interviewing all who meet them.
Across all recruitment activity, we recognise that selection methods may vary depending on the nature and scale of the campaign and will be applied fairly, consistently and proportionately in line with our Disability Confident commitments.
In High Volume campaigns including Graduate, Apprentice and Intern recruitment the minimum criteria we set is achieving a pass mark in our first stage assessments, adopting a proportionate approach to the Disability Confident Offer an Interview scheme.
Please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments for any stages of the application process.
