Job overview

TfL plays a key role in shaping what life is like in London. Our transport infrastructure and public transport network is admired around the world. We are literally changing London for the future – making it one of the best cities to live, work and visit.  Around 3.6 billion journeys were made across our transport network in 2025/26 and we do all that we can to keep our city moving, growing and working. To meet the needs of our customers, now and for the future, we’re providing the modern and affordable transport network London needs. To support this, our multi billion-pound programme to make our services more reliable, frequent and accessible includes modernising the Piccadilly Line, improving Step Free Access at stations, and investing in congestion and air quality initiatives on our roads through our healthy streets approach.

As a Finance graduate, you will have a pivotal part to play in the delivery of many projects, working to generate an operating surplus to reinvest in our services. You will work with stakeholders to make commercial business decisions together; challenging, driving and guiding them to reduce costs and increase income.

What will I be doing?

As a graduate, this three-year programme will develop your holistic understanding of all the different aspects that make up Finance as a business function.  You will complete several placements in different parts of Finance, whilst studying for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) professional qualification through the Level 7 Accountancy or Taxation Professional apprenticeship.

Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and breadth of experience you need for your successful career. Your journey through the scheme will allow you to build up knowledge in transactional accounting, apply that knowledge and gain partnering experience across all of TfL’s major business units in a finance business partnering role, before transitioning into a strategic finance placement and contributing towards TfL’s significant strategy publications, assisting with our treasury management or seeking innovative funding solutions for some of our most interesting projects.

We also understand that everyone’s career and ambitions are different, so every graduate’s journey with us is unique. We have designed a rotational placement structure, with core and elective placements to allow you to shape your career to your own ambitions. Here is an example of what your development journey could look like:

Year 1: Building Foundations in Finance

  • Develop foundational finance and transactional accounting skills.
  • Gain experience across the Business Services Function which includes Record to Account, Project to Asset, and Reporting teams.
  • Support periodic financial activities and maintain accurate accounts.
  • Responsibilities include manual journal posting, account reconciliations, and process improvements.
  • Manage the finance timetable and deliver real-time reports with business insights.
  • Experience of asset capitalization and depreciation.
  • Experience of front-line customer services through an operational placement.

Years 2 and 3: Applying Knowledge and Building Partnerships

  • Apply financial knowledge and develop business partnering skills.
  • Select placements across TfL’s delivery organisations.
  • Build trusted adviser relationships and support strategic decision-making.
  • Understand cost and income drivers within business areas.
  • Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Develop expertise in strategic placements such as Financial Planning and Analysis and Corporate Finance

Where can this career take me?

TfL has an excellent track record in continuing to support our graduate alumni with very high retention and promotion rates, and many of our graduates have gone on to hold senior management roles within the organisation.  There are many opportunities to move between finance teams to get a breadth of experience in operational, project and commercial functions.

What training and support will you get?

Inclusive recruitment process

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and aim to reflect the diverse communities we serve. We believe that a diverse workforce enables us to deliver better services and outcomes. Our goal is to make our recruitment as inclusive as possible. As a Disability Confident Leader, we actively encourage applications from disabled people.

As part of the Disability Confident scheme, we aim to offer an assessment or interview to candidates who apply via the scheme where the minimum essential criteria for skills, knowledge and experience has been met. In some circumstances, it may not be practical to offer an interview or assessment to every candidate who applies through the scheme and meet the minimum essential criteria; in these situations, we select candidates who best meet the minimum criteria for the job rather than interviewing all who meet them.

Across all recruitment activity, we recognise that selection methods may vary depending on the nature and scale of the campaign and will be applied fairly, consistently and proportionately in line with our Disability Confident commitments.

In High Volume campaigns including Graduate, Apprentice and Intern recruitment the minimum criteria we set is achieving a pass mark in our first stage assessments, adopting a proportionate approach to the Disability Confident Offer an Interview scheme.

Please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments for any stages of the application process.

We've signed the Gradcracker feedback pledge.
(This means that we will supply feedback if requested after an interview.)
