Kieran Howell

Design Engineer (L3)

How do you feel supported in your daily work and career?

Tony Gee has offered fantastic support to my ICE progression. I have been able to go at my own pace with regards to my ICE progression and Tony Gee will support you whether you want chartership sooner or later.

The annual appraisals have also given me an opportunity to pursue areas I enjoy or want to improve on. For example, after my first year I decided I wanted more experience in drawing production and the company helped place me in a position where this would be possible.

On a day-to-day basis, Tony Gee’s flexible working hours allow me to fit my work around hours that suit me best. The option to work from home also allows for further flexibility. Both aspects allow me to pursue personal & health goals comfortably alongside my work.

What advice would you give to those considering Tony Gee as a career option?

Tony Gee is a fantastic option for those who enjoy or want to gain experience in structural design. From my first week at the company, I have been involved with interesting project design work and have continuously been given more responsibility over my first 2 years at the company. The company values an eagerness to learn and an ability to work well with others, so don’t worry too much if you feel that you have some gaps in your engineering knowledge.

My biggest piece of advice for people starting at TG would be to ask questions. There is a wealth of knowledge in each office, and the senior engineers are always open to answer questions.

What would you consider your most valuable experience to be since working at Tony Gee?

My most valuable experience from a design perspective must be finishing my first detailed design on a bridge in Stockport. Since I first chose to do Civil Engineering at university, I’ve wanted to work on designing bridges, and to be such a big part of a bridge design, seeing it through from options to detailed design was incredibly satisfying. I hope to continue to involve myself on this project through to construction.

Outside of my design work, I’ve found the STEM outreach programmes that Tony Gee are involved with are incredibly valuable. I’ve had the opportunity to attend schools, careers fairs and help with experience. I’ve found this to be very rewarding as well as helping improve my communication and leadership skills.
