Software Engineering Summer Internship

Computer Science, Software, ML, Maths.

Company Overview

Alloyed is a young venture-funded company of about 300 world-class metallurgists, engineers, and software developers working across the UK, Japan and the US to build the future of advanced metal components and systems.

What we do
Take a look at what Alloyed get up to.

To do this, Alloyed uses proprietary software packages which combine advanced machine learning and physical modelling to invent better alloys, devise better ways to process them, and design better 3D-printed components and assemblies.

Alloyed is composed of a range of divisions, enabling metal technology from composition to systems:

  • Core Technology: Alloyed's internal research and technology hub, focused on creating the new alloys, manufacturing methods, digital tools and intellectual property that will power the company's future products and capabilities.
  • Innovation Services: Work directly with customers to develop, optimise and qualify materials and manufacturing processes for demanding aerospace, defence, energy and industrial applications.
  • Component Engineering: Design, manufacture and validate production-ready components, turning material and process innovations into high-performance hardware for customer applications.
  • Argive: Develop and manufacture complete microturbine engine systems under ambitious timelines and customer expectations, enabled by Alloyed’s software stack, proprietary Alloys and AM processing capabilities.

Role Overview

We're looking for bright, curious candidates to join Alloyed's Software Engineering team. We like solving difficult problems and building software properly before rounding off the day with a little table tennis.

You'll work on production software at the intersection of cloud technology, data and advanced manufacturing. Our platforms support engineers throughout the product lifecycle, from design and process development to manufacturing, inspection and qualification.

No two weeks are the same. You might create a new web application, build a .NET service, work with SQL databases or design an API. You'll gain hands-on experience with modern software development practices, including automated testing, code review, containerised applications, CI/CD and cloud deployment.

You'll work closely with software engineers, materials scientists and process engineers to build real products from week one. That could mean understanding a user problem, designing and building a new feature, testing it with engineers, or supporting its release into production.

Summer Internships:

8-week placements for students looking to apply their learning in an industry environment starting in July 2027.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, deploy and maintain Alloyed’s software platforms for:
    • Data management / Traceability / Visualisation and analysis / Process optimisation
  • Work within a fast-paced, agile development team alongside software engineers, process engineers, technicians and materials scientists.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from understanding user requirements and generating user stories through to development, testing and release.
  • Work collaboratively to solve complex technical and engineering problems.
  • Translate specialised engineering knowledge and workflows into intuitive, reliable software.
  • Integrate machine-learning models into production software for performance prediction and process optimisation.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of our software architecture, development practices and engineering standards.

Essential skills

  • A strong technical background, demonstrated through a completed or expected degree in a quantitative subject such as computer science, engineering, mathematics or the physical sciences (2:1 minimum).
  • Experience writing software in at least one object-oriented programming language through academic, personal or professional projects, for example C#, C++, Java, Python or Go.
  • An interest in applied engineering or science.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Experience with version control systems, such as Git.
  • Understanding of data structures and algorithms.

Desired skills

  • Good understanding of software design patterns, best practices and principles, e.g. DRY.
  • Familiarity with test-driven development.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Understanding of concurrent programming principles.
  • Experience programming with 3D geometry.
  • Experience developing or integrating machine-learning models.

Technology Stack:

  • Backend: C# | C++ | ASP.NET Core | EF Core | GraphQL | REST
  • Frontend: Blazor | Next.js | React | TypeScript
  • Data: Microsoft SQL Server
  • Cloud & DevOps: Azure | Azure DevOps | Docker
  • AI: Azure AI Foundry
