As a Software Engineer, you’ll create cutting edge software for our hardware. You’ll be involved in the entire lifecycle of a product, from design and development to integration.
From head up displays and flight controls to missile targeting systems, the quality of our software is every bit as important as our hardware. In this key role, you’ll be responsible for the code that underpins these products. It’s a challenge that will see you getting involved in the entire development lifecycle of a product, from requirements capture to design, development, testing and integration. As well as writing code, you’ll find yourself carrying out a whole range of important tasks – from communicating with clients and creating UML diagrams to assisting with final system integration. Work closely with both Electronic and Systems engineers, you'll enable the development of complex real-world systems that have to perform perfectly every time, as the consequences of failure could be catastrophic. Welcome to Software Engineering in the real world.
To succeed in this area, you’ll need a minimum 2:1 Bachelor's degree for our graduate scheme. Please refer to each business unit listed below for accepted degree subjects. In addition, you must be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve security clearance.
In terms of personal qualities, you’ll need strong analytical skills and creativity to devise methods of producing optimum performance in the software you create. It is also essential for Software Engineers to be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, so excellent communication skills are a must. As a company committed to talent, we welcome applications from a diverse range of people, from all backgrounds and with many different skills, experience and perspectives.
Applied Intelligence: Everything we do creates a safer future. In a new age of cyber threats, our people have a shared vision to protect the connected world, to create and deliver intelligent global solutions across an ever changing technological landscape. As a new graduate, we expect you to be ready to tackle (and enjoy!) programming tasks from the outset, but we will take the time to mentor you through smaller packages of work and enhancements to our product range. You will work primarily in Java, however we always look for the best framework for the job; some of our developments use C# .NET, C++ and HTML5 technologies. Our projects range from pure R&D to major new product developments and enhancements. You’ll be involved in all parts of the software lifecycle, and as you gain experience, your responsibilities will widen. We are obsessed about solving problems for our customers; we bring together great minds who face tough challenges on a daily basis, and are encouraged to make a difference.
Electronic Systems: This sector spans the commercial and defence electronics markets with a broad portfolio of mission-critical electronic systems, including flight and engine controls; electronic warfare, and night vision systems; surveillance and reconnaissance sensors; secure networked communications equipment; geospatial imagery intelligence products and systems; mission management; and power-and energy-management systems. Preferred degree(s) include; Software Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Physics, Electronics, Embedded Computing, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Automotive Engineering, Software Engineering.
Military Air & Information: Defence Information is a “line of business” within BAE Systems Military Air and Information, though our products (both goods and services) are not specific to the Air Sector. We combine the latest technologies with our own domain knowledge and intellectual property and deliver them through a range of innovative services and products which help the customer gain information superiority. Our products are targeted to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving modern and future markets in defence, security, and complex mission critical decision-making systems. Products and services range from battlefield communication systems and autonomous vehicles to general IT and logistic support, including consultancy across BAE Systems.
Maritime Services: As a Software Engineer, you will have the opportunity to contribute to a broad range of projects and be encouraged to experience different areas of the business to give you a wider appreciation of the business and its long-term objectives. Based in Portsmouth, you'll be joining the team that delivers end-to-end maritime services — including warship availability, facilities management, training and ongoing support for radar, torpedoes and small boats. Preferred degree(s) include; Engineering, Scientific, Computing or numerate discipline alongside some programming experience.
