Division overview: Government

At BAE Systems Digital Intelligence, we pride ourselves in being a leader in the cyber defence industry, and Government contracts are an area we have many decades of experience in. Our Government business unit houses four of our critical client groups: UK National Security, Global National Security, defence and central government. Government and key infrastructure networks are critical targets to defend as the effects of these networks being breached can be devastating.

As the cyber and intelligence arm of BAE Systems, we employ over 3,500 people around the world, with the main focus being here in the UK. This presents a prolific set of opportunities for our engineers to develop their skills and progress their careers.

Role Profile

As a Graduate Engineer, you will join an established research team, working alongside skilled and experienced individuals who are motivated to train and coach you on the day-to-day skills required to produce high quality solutions to complex engineering problems. 

Our graduates get involved with the whole research journey from day 1, from scoping, preliminary assessment, prototyping, trials, demonstration, reporting, and where possible customer engagement. You will learn the tools, techniques and approaches used by our research engineering professionals and apply them in a controlled environment to ensure research outcomes are achieved. 

There are a variety of disciplines within Research Engineering, and while you will specialise in one, you will be encouraged to develop skills and understanding across the range. It is the breadth of skills within our engineering teams that enables us to refine what’s possible. These include:

  • Signal Processing Engineer: Utilising a range of tools (Matlab in particular) to analyse signals and prototype algorithms, before transforming into viable realtime implementations in software (C++) and/or FPGA firmware (VHDL)
  • RF Engineer: Undertaking R&D across the EW spectrum, near/far field, MHz to THz. Covering antennas (including Low observable), microwave devices, system performance, EMC/EMH, and radar cross sections.   
  • Data Analyst/Engineer: Extracting value from data continues to be a core aspect of our work, requiring us to develop new techniques to process, analyse, and visualise data. This also includes considerations around human factors, and the interpretation of data.
  • Hardware Engineer (Electronics/Mechanics): This has 2 main aspects, evaluation and development. In evaluation our engineers seek to find the limits of what a piece of hardware (electronics, mechanical, material) can achieve.
    In development we look to build prototypes to explore further what can be achieved. This can involve designing and producing custom hardware (PCBs/assemblies), or integrating components together to push their limits.
  • Trials: To demonstrate, evaluate, and prove our research activities, we often have to design, prepare, and execute trials programmes. Some of these are lab based, but can also be field based and incorporate active customer involvement.

Desired Competencies

As part of our graduate programme, we will support you in developing the right skills for both your role and career, but are looking for people who show:

  • An interest and aptitude in solving problems
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills
  • A desire to learn
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Articulate, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work as part of a team

Desired Technical Ability

Given the range of roles, we are looking for people from a wide range of backgrounds, however experience in any of the following would be advantageous:

  • Operating systems
  • C/C++, Java, Javascript, Python
  • Networking protocols
  • Data analysis
  • HDFS, Spark, Jupyter 
  • Signal Processing, Matlab
  • RF propagation, modulation schemes
  • Electronics, semi-conductors
  • Materials science

Entry Requirements

You will need to have obtained (in the last 3 years) or be studying towards a 2:2 or above, in a STEM degree
Only those with the permanent and unrestricted right to live and work in the UK will be considered for a position within BAE Systems Digital Intelligence. 

We expect great things of our graduates. In return, you can expect a £30,000 starting salary with regular, performance based uplifts and a comprehensive benefits and pension package, including 25 days’ annual holiday with flexible leave arrangements and product and service discounts.

What’s next?

In the fields to follow, please highlight which of the described professions are best aligned to your current skillset and aspirations. If eligible, you will then be invited to complete a digital assessment for the relevant role.  The final stage of the process will then be an interview with one of our Engineers.
