FAQs

I've submitted a job application. What is the next step?

Thanks for applying! You should have received an email confirmation that your application has been received.

How can applicants improve their chances of standing out in the review process?

Be prepared. Be unique. Be yourself. Start with a strong, tailored resume that highlights your skills and accomplishments both in and outside the classroom, and includes relevant keywords to help recruiters match you with the right opportunities.

Stand out by networking - attend recruitment events, or connect on LinkedIn. Show you're well-rounded by getting involved in meaningful clubs, organisations, or side projects that reflect your passions. Prioritise quality over quantity - actively engage in what you commit to.

What is the recruitment process like?

First, candidates apply to an open position. Next, the recruiter and hiring manager review applicant qualifications and decide which candidates will move to an interview round. Finally, selected candidates move through the interview process and the recruiter extends an offer to the final candidate.

The recruiter will share more about what to expect when you are invited to an interview, because the process varies by position. For example, engineering roles typically consist of a behavioural interview and a technical interview (such as a coding assessment) while other roles may include behavioural interviews and a writing assessment.

Generally, we'll evaluate your skills and experience against our current business needs. We'll ask you about your academic and work experience, and you can ask questions, too. Be prepared to tell us about your achievements and the value you could bring to Cisco.

How do I prepare for an interview at Cisco?
  • Do your research. Explore different Cisco training and tutorials (and if the position you’re applying to is focused on Splunk, Splunk’s specific training and certifications.)
  • Come curious, come hungry! We want our candidates to be eager to learn. We encourage you to ask questions about Cisco, the team, and the position during your interview. We also want to see that you are driven and excited to discover new things.
  • Most importantly, we want to understand who YOU are. Be prepared to tell us about yourself: your background, your accomplishments and why you’re interested in the role.
What will my career progression look like at Cisco?

Drive your own progress and direct your career growth by identifying opportunities, adding value, and raising your hand to get involved in assignments that will stretch you beyond your current role.

How do I know what position best fits my background?

Each job posting will have a list of qualifications. Be sure to review it to understand if you are a fit based on your skill sets and education requirements. For example, you may be a better fit for an internship position over an apprenticeship based on certain job requirements.

Additionally, some positions may have location requirements. Relocation is on a case-by-case basis and depends on various factors including business needs and type of role. With that said, we offer flexible work practices and allow some employees the option of working remotely.

The job description will also provide an in-depth overview of the position and team so you can assess if it is a position that interests you!

If you are unsure if you are a fit, we encourage you to apply anyway. If you are selected to move forward in the process, your recruiter can answer any specific questions you have around the role, qualifications, location, visa or work permits and more!

Can I use Generative AI technologies (like ChatGPT) during Cisco's hiring process (i.e., to apply for roles, on technical assessments, in interviews, etc.)?

We deeply value and welcome the skills, creativity, and unique perspectives that each candidate brings to our company, and are committed to promoting fairness, honesty, and originality in all aspects of our hiring process. To ensure the integrity in the application process and reliability of our evaluations, we require appropriate candidate input when using emerging Generative AI technologies like ChatGPT and co-pilots.

Our perspective? Any tools used to prepare yourself for the hiring process should not replace your authentic thoughts, experiences, and capabilities.

Our Stance on AI

GenAI best practices and permitted uses

At Cisco, we are committed to promoting fairness, integrity, and originality in all aspects of our hiring process. We value the skills, creativity, and unique perspectives that each candidate brings. As a leader in AI, we fundamentally believe in embracing innovation ethically and responsibly.

To ensure the integrity and reliability of our evaluations, we require appropriate candidate input when using emerging Generative AI technologies like ChatGPT and co-pilots. Any tools used to prepare yourself for the hiring process should not replace your authentic thoughts, experiences, and capabilities.

Our philosophy

  • Responsible Use of Technology: While we acknowledge the advancements in technology, candidates are expected to use these tools responsibly. Leveraging resources like ChatGPT and Generative AI to enhance their understanding, brainstorm ideas, or seek guidance to prepare effectively is acceptable.
  • Originality is Key: Candidates are expected to submit responses, resumes, and/or cover letters that reflect their own work, ideas, and understanding at each stage of the hiring process. This includes assessments, coding tasks, and interviews. The use of AI tools should enhance, but not replace, a candidate’s capabilities. Candidates must ensure that the final submission represents their own skills and efforts.
  • Authenticity & Accountability: Candidates are accountable for the integrity and authenticity of their submissions. We know that with the right prompts and human guidance, AI can help candidates effectively communicate their unique experiences, thoughts, and skills, but directly copying and pasting AI-generated responses is a misrepresentation of the real candidate’s abilities and potential.

How to use

Good uses for GenAI:

  • Ask for tips on how to prepare for different types of tests and interviews.
  • To structure thoughts, check readability, and enhance clarity of responses, emails, resumes, and cover letters.
  • As a calculator.
  • To review job listings to find keywords to use in your resume or cover letter that accurately reflect your personal experience.
  • Brainstorming multiple approaches to solving a coding problem or system design question.
  • To review code for errors or suggest improvements.

Poor uses for GenAI:

  • Copying and pasting AI-generated responses to write your resume, cover letter, or writing sample.
  • Generating a scripted response to complete an assessment.
  • Creating and reading from an AI-generated script to respond to an interview question.
  • Creation of imaginary, dishonest or inaccurate thoughts and experiences.
  • Generating the solution to a coding problem or design question in real time.
  • Generating entire code segments and presenting them as your own work.

Our commitment

We are dedicated to fostering a transparent, respectful, and ethical hiring environment. By adhering to these guidelines, we aim to provide equal opportunities to all candidates, while also upholding the integrity of our selection process. We encourage candidates to reach out to our team if they have any questions regarding the appropriate use of technology during the hiring process.
