Local Unit & Position Description

DNV Spadeadam Research and Development could be the place for you. We are offering a Higher Apprenticeship that could lead to you becoming a Mechanical Technician, with scope to moving onto more senior roles as you become more knowledgeable, skilled and experienced. The apprenticeship will start in September 2022.

Spadeadam Research and Development is a secure, site where large scale hazards testing is carried out for a range of industries. Our site provides a challenging environment where personnel are encouraged to develop their skills and progress their education. At present, site personnel are being supported in their education all the way to doctorate level. If you join us as an apprentice you will develop with a mixture of formal education, on the job training and mentoring.

Working both independently and as part of a team the Mechanical Technician’s role will include:

  • Assisting in the design of test rigs
  • Constructing, operating and maintaining test rigs
  • Maintaining and operating pressurised systems, including valves, pipelines and vessels
  • Supporting the delivery of hazard awareness courses
  • Setting up demonstrations including: gas release, fires and explosions.

The 5 year apprenticeship will take the chosen candidate to a HND (Foundation Degree; Level 5) or Degree (Level 6 upwards).

Essential Skills

  • Be practically minded with good problem-solving skills
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills
  • Be enthusiastic, reliable and flexible
  • Understand the importance of working safely
  • Be open minded when faced with challenges and change.

Apprenticeship Structure:

  • Year 1: Full time study at college towards a NVQ Level 3.
  • Year 2: Gaining experience on site while continuing NVQ Level 3 by day release.
  • Year 3: Working on site but with continued assessment of development to complete NVQ Level 3.
  • Year 4: Starting HNC on day release.
  • Year 5: Complete HNC followed by a further six months assessment in the workplace.

Formal education and workplace assessment will be carried out by a local training provider.
