The Opportunity

Our Cardiff-based Water Civil Structures team is a rapidly growing group of engineers delivering a diverse range of projects that have a direct impact on the environment and communities. We work on multidisciplinary projects from concept and feasibility studies through to detailed design, construction support, and the management of existing assets. Our work includes the design of new structures as well as the inspection, assessment, repair, and modification of existing infrastructure. Projects range from coastal and river flood defences, weirs, sluices, and fish passes, through to structures within wastewater treatment works that help improve water quality in our rivers. We provide opportunities to develop a broad range of technical, project delivery, and collaborative skills while contributing to meaningful real-world outcomes.

Typical day-to-day tasks may include:

• Carrying out assessment, analysis, and design, preparing design reports, sketches, drawings, calculations, and specifications.
• Collaborating with Arup colleagues in other disciplines, such as working with landscape architects, environmental and ecological specialists, geotechnical, geomorphologists and more.
• Meeting with clients, national agencies, local authorities, and other stakeholders, including site visits.
• Specifying and analysing survey information and constraints for solution development.
• Developing and appraising options, feasibility studies and supporting the production of engineering solutions.

Is this role right for you?

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes: 

• A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or similar.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong numerical skills
• Enthusiasm for a career in structural engineering within the water sector
• Demonstrable understanding of general structural behaviour and an ability to use this understanding to develop practical solutions to meet client needs
• Creativity and a desire to think beyond the norm
• Aptitude to work on your own initiative, be proactive and take responsibility.
• An interest in and application of digital skills, such as computer coding for design automation and problem-solving is an advantage
• A willingness to travel (mainly around Wales and the Southwest) is encouraged.

To be considered for a graduate opportunity, your application must include a copy of your academic transcript and meet the following criteria:

• Full working rights in the country of application
• No more than 12 months of full-time experience in a comparable role
• Recently graduated, or on track to graduate, from your most recent degree, related to your role of choice, before employment starts.
