Laura

Engineering Graduate

How did you join the graduate programme, what was the process?

I submitted my application and was invited to an assessment centre to meet the team and was offered a role within a few days.

What has your experience been like so far?

It’s been a very long road with many fantastic experiences along the way. On the graduate programme I met graduates doing different functions from all over the country developing our skills together.

We had team building, leadership and networking events to enable us to build our company networks and learn about the businesses. On the job I started in the sensors business and then moved to the weapons business building my experience as a systems engineer.

Everyone I met was enormously friendly and very supportive of my career and the experiences I could gain. I’ve been on a fair few programs now spanning multiple products, engineering disciplines and countries.

I completed the Raytheon international engineering leadership programme to build a larger international network and further skills as an engineer working with different cultures and functions. I am now working towards being a chartered engineer.

I have had many rewarding and wonderful experiences as part of the extracurricular activities I take part in.

I joined the STEM program from the very start to become a STEM ambassador to support students from all ages to understand what’s out there to do and now am part of the STEM core team who produce and manage activities for STEM.

I also joined multiple employee resource groups and now lead the NXGEN ERG committee to provide the best networking and skills events for those early in their careers at Raytheon.

What have the main benefits been for you?

The main benefits for me is the network I have created within my job and through my other extracurricular activities in the company and also the engineering experiences and technical knowledge I have been able to build.

The graduate programme created a perfect foundation to lift off from to build a career at Raytheon. I have learnt so much from being able to work on different programmes. Each programme offers new challenges and they make you a better engineer to see how things go right but also how things can go wrong and learn from that.

What advice can you offer to future applicants?

Most graduates do not understand the role they’re taking and the industry they’ve applied for as they’ve never done that before. I suggest do some research into the company, the industry and what generally the roles entail to find the best start for you.

Also at Raytheon you never know what experiences you’ll get. Every engineering project is different, it could be developing new technology or a new way of integrating current technology.

What I found is you never know what’s round the corner so the possibilities are endless and that is what is exciting so find what is exciting for you and go for it!
