About Highways England

The country never stops. So neither do we. We’re responsible for operating, maintaining and improving all 4,300 miles of England’s motorways and major A roads. We are the backbone of businesses and communities up and down the country.

At Highways England we manage one of the world’s most advanced road networks. We care about the journeys our customers make, we want them to get home safe and well, and we want to connect our country to benefit our economy, business and our customers.

We are delivering the biggest investment in our country’s motorways and main trunk roads in a generation, for every £1 invested in the Strategic Road Network, £3 is delivered back into the UK economy.

Our ambition is to ensure our major roads are more dependable, durable and most importantly – are safe. We work hard to make sure our road network is:

  • Sustain a safe & serviceable network where no-one should be harmed when travelling or working.
  • Support economic growth with a modern, reliable network that reduces delays, creates jobs, helps businesses and unlocks new development.
  • Free flowing network where routine delays are more infrequent, and journeys are safer and more reliable.
  • More accessible, integrated network so people are free to choose their mode of transport and can move safely across and alongside our roads.
