Although the actual material I learned at University hasn’t been 100% relevant to my job a number of transferable skills have proved vital. These include: data collection, excel skills, statistical / number analysis and research methods which is valuable when estimating costs, budgeting and managing contracts. Modern construction also increasingly focuses on sustainability and environmental impacts which we learned about on my course. Overall, while a geography degree may not be the traditional route, it equipped me with valuable analytical, spatial, environmental, and project management skills that align well with the demands of my job.
The opportunity to work towards my RICS has been invaluable as well as other areas of training I have identified in my 6-monthly appraisals with my line manager. Morgan Sindall encourages you to take ownership of your learning to that you can shape how you want to progress to your personal interests.
