I studied Bcs Construction Management at Nottingham Trent University.
I am currently working as a graduate site manager.
I wanted to apply for a graduate role at MSC because the scheme they provide looks perfect to allow you to develop into your chosen profession, the company looked to have so much support and financial resource to invest in your career to make sure it's a success, and they see the importance in nurturing young talent and investing into young people. The type of work MSC carry seemed perfect for graduates, typically not too big, not too small, rewarding public sector work that would be perfect for a graduate to develop their skills on. I joined MCS on a placement year during university for the same reasons, and was offered a graduate role off the back of my placement performance. MSC partly sponsored my final year in university as well.
My degree has been very useful in my job role. I can apply the theories and text book knowledge I gained in university, into my job role on site every day, putting the theory into practice. University gave me a very well-rounded fundamental understanding of construction, like building materials, site logistics, programming/ planning, and health and safety etc, which can be used to springboard my development on site in my day-to-day job role.
In terms of development opportunities, MSC will facilitate any training you wish to get involved with, for example, first aid, fire marshal, IPAF, SMSTS, and I have recently been enrolled on the 2 year PDP graduate scheme to obtain CIOB membership/Chartership. On my placement year during university, I was rotated around the business for 3 months, shadowing each job role in the company for one or two weeks at a time, which was incredibly beneficial for my experience and networking within the business. I know that, as a graduate, if I asked to shadow a department to gain some experience and insight into their job role, MSC would be more than happy to support me in that.
One piece of advice I would give to a graduate looking to apply, Is its an opportunity to good to pass on, you will attend training and networking events and nights away with the cohort of graduates around the country, and knowing you're not the only one in your position is a massive help to easing you into the working world. You can communicate with each other, and get 1-2-1 reviews and catch ups with the learning & development managers to make sure your always on the right track. Being a graduate really gives you an unmatched opportunity to learn on the job without being fully expected to know everything from day one, allowing you to grow and develop with far less pressure.
