BEng Hons Chemical Engineering
I am a graduate facility engineer in the paint shop at Nissan Motor Manufacturing (NMUK) in Sunderland.
I wanted to work in a dynamic environment and take on responsibility early in my career. Nissan seemed to have exciting projects to introduce new electrical vehicles on the run towards net zero. Having previously done an industrial placement here, I had no doubt Nissan would meet my expectations as a graduate.
The engineering fundamentals have been essential in understanding my role and adapting quickly to different tasks. I use problem solving skills and critical thinking daily. Engineering management has also been very valuable, as a good part of my role involves managing contractors across various projects.
I have been assigned a mentor for first hand support throughout the two-year graduate scheme, although everyone in my team is willing to help and answer my questions. I have been entrusted with leading my own projects from the start, which is a great opportunity for a first graduate job. I also have access to a wide range of training courses from health & safety compliance to technical knowledge relevant to my role. Nissan further supports my personal development through activities like outreach.
Your technical skills are essential for this type of position, however, do not underestimate the importance of "soft skills". It is important to showcase your personality and demonstrate that you are a good team player. Think about group activities you have participated in and what you learnt from them.
