What first sparked your interest in the MTC and why did you apply?

I met an employee of the MTC at a careers fair at Coventry University. He was very enthusiastic about his job and what the MTC does. After some research on the company and a site visit with the university, I was very impressed with the facilities and the research on cutting edge technology. The environment was very friendly which creates a good working atmosphere.

What were your first impressions of the MTC Graduate Programme?

My first impression was that there were so many opportunities. The MTC has such a diverse range of research projects ranging from robotics to virtual reality. The two year scheme allows you to work within different technologies in the MTC. The MTC is very supportive to ensure that you can develop your career.

Describe a typical day for you on the MTC Graduate Programme?

Since I have started working at the MTC, every day has been different. By working on real life research projects my tasks vary from day-to-day. There are many exciting challenges and problems to solve. I am always learning something new by working alongside engineers. I work in a team full of interesting and skilful people who I enjoy working with.

What's been the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge was the transition between university and working in industry. The graduates work alongside Research Engineers; from the first week I was assigned to work on a research project for a customer. My colleagues were very supportive and helpful, meaning that I was able to work without any issues. The staff at the MTC are very approachable and are happy to help which creates a very accommodating environment.

How has the Graduate Programme been beneficial to your career?

The MTC supports your career development by providing training and giving you opportunities to work on a wide range of projects. I have received training on how to use software packages and I have also had practical training such as operating lathes and milling machines. The MPDS scheme is also very advantageous for career development as the mentors help you to become a Chartered Engineer. Your mentor helps you to set personal and professional objectives to help you obtain your goals.

Would you recommend the programme to others, and what advice would you offer to those looking to apply to the MTC Graduate Programme?

I would definitely recommend the MTC graduate programme. The MTC offers the chance to work on real life projects in many different areas, with talented engineers who help you to develop your career.

I would advise those who are looking to apply to keep an open mind and to try different areas of manufacturing, you may be surprised to find out what you enjoy. When applying for the graduate scheme, make sure to research different areas of manufacturing and to keep up-to-date with technology.
