Amy Varley

We spoke to Amy, a Finance Graduate, who joined Virgin Media O2 in September 2023. She told us a little bit about her journey into the business, what interested her about the role and her day-to-day responsibilities. Here’s what she had to say...

Can you tell us a little more about your journey into this graduate scheme?

Previous to this role, I spent 8 years in the education sector – starting with 2 years as an administration assistant and a further 6 years as a Secondary School Maths Teacher. Between these, I spent 3 years at Edge Hill University studying Secondary Mathematics Education.

Why did you apply for this role at Virgin Media O2?

I always had an interest in finance and the corporate world, so I was excited when I saw that Virgin Media O2 were hiring, and they weren’t expecting any previous experience or specific degree to support the application.

There are two main reasons I decided to apply:

• The role itself – coming from a non-finance background, I didn’t know exactly what part of finance I wanted to work in, and this offered a better opportunity to see more areas of finance rather than being pigeonholed from the beginning.
• The training – I was excited at the prospect of studying for CIMA qualification.

What is your current role? What does it look like day-to-day?

I currently work in the Hardware Accounting team for the O2 side. Day-to-day, I look at handsets, SIMs, tablet sales and report the income of this. I spend time working with Supply Chain and external colleagues from the recycle scheme.

I have the opportunity to get together with all grads on the scheme each quarter and have a chance to speak with various members of the business.

Is there anything else you would like to let others know?

I would 100% recommend people apply for this scheme or any of the schemes with Virgin Media O2. In particular for the Finance one, if you are passionate about a career within finance, but not sure which area you are wanting to go into, it is a great starting point as you get opportunities to see many areas of the business.
