CGG Commences Global Natural Hydrogen Screening Project with Industry Support

Added: 2 weeks ago by CGG

CGG has recently commenced a commercial worldwide natural hydrogen screening project. The project leverages CGG’s wealth of subsurface data, multi-disciplinary geoscience expertise, latest technology advances and high-performance computing capabilities to identify and high-grade areas for natural hydrogen exploration.

Natural hydrogen is an area of increasing interest because recent research indicates it is far more common than previously thought in the Earth’s crust.

Existing routes to generate hydrogen for industrial use are either carbon-intensive via methane reformation or not the most efficient use of available energy and water, for example electrolysis using electricity generated by renewable or nuclear energy. Using either route to generate hydrogen for energy use at a global scale does not make sense although there are potential local applications as a storage solution for excess renewable energy or to overcome geographical barriers to energy transmission.

The existence of a large global hydrogen resource is therefore potentially game-changing as it would open up the possibility of reducing the carbon intensity of a range of industrial sectors and diversifying the energy mix in the near to mid-term without requiring the invention of radically new technologies for exploration, transport or use.

CGG is committed to using its industry-leading technology to develop new solutions to address the complex challenges presented by the energy transition. This natural hydrogen screening project builds on our successful track record of developing valuable global resource screening studies for geothermal energy, critical mineral exploration and carbon and energy storage, that combine our geoscience, data science and technology expertise.
