Hamza Abedrabbo

Engineering Graduate

Tell us a bit about yourself, what programme did you join at SSE and when, what location are/were you based in?

I am 25 years old, Jordanian, Electrical Engineer. I have joined the Engineering Graduate programme in September 2020, and I am currently based in Glasgow.

What did you study at university and what university do you/did you attend/what year group?

I had studied Electrical Engineering from the University of Jordan and graduated in 2019 and had achieved an MSc degree in Electrical Power & Energy Systems from the University of Strathclyde in 2020.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate or placement role and what made you choose SSE and the area you are now working i

Utility and Energy Sectors, and I choose SSE as it is one of the leading companies in the energy industry in the UK, as the renewable generation industry is on the rise, north of Scotland’s transmission network is very vital to achieve the 2050 net zero carbon emissions target. Thus, in my opinion, SSEN is the best career choice for me to gain experience as an Electrical engineer who is enthusiastic about power systems and specifically transmission networks, as it allows me to be part of a righteous movement towards the environment.

How did you find the recruitment process?  Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes/Summer Placements?

I have found it reasonable and fair; I would advise the students to do their research on the company, be themselves and talk of their own experiences from University, school and life.

Tell us a bit about your current role, what you’ve learnt and what you’ve enjoyed most.

I lie within the asset management department, I am currently working with the asset condition and engineering team, in the ACE team we are looking into developing testing strategies and building an online monitoring system for fixed assets such as transformers, bushings and circuit breakers; the aim is to develop a system capable to predict the faults occurring in assets and prevent those faults from happening through a condition based maintenance strategy.

If you are working towards a professional qualification, tell us a bit about that and the support you receive on this

I am currently in the process of becoming a chartered engineer, which is a very important qualification for engineers, and I have a mentor who guides me through my chartership application.
