Manchester Metrolink

The largest light rail network in the UK, Manchester Metrolink’s success was rooted in deep experience and built upon collaborative relationships. The initial Phase 3 project, secured in 2008 by consortium members - Laing O’Rourke, VolkerRail and Hitachi, was to treble the size of the system. The consortium secured further works, resulting in 17-years of continual delivery.

 

Manchester Airport Transformation Programme

Laing O’Rourke, having provided new airport infrastructure around the globe, understands the challenge and its solutions. Our aviation expertise makes us a world leader. We were responsible for the extension to Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2. This included the forecourt and baggage hall, as well as the addition of a 216-metre pier, an eight-storey carpark and a bus lounge. The terminal would increase in size by 150%.

 

Two Fifty One Build, London’s Southwark Area

During the Two Fifty One build in London’s Southwark area, technology and logistics, including offsite manufacturing, came together to enable an entirely new pace and quality of delivery. Over 70% of the residential tower was constructed off site and trucked in. Our integrated, just-in-time approach reduced onsite hours by 50% and meant that ground to level 41 was completed in just 70 weeks. Laing O’Rourke’s optimised in-house manufacturing capabilities delivered powerful certainty and measurable savings.

 

Tideway, Central London

The largest project ever undertaken in the UK water industry, London’s 25km ‘super sewer’ will clean up the River Thames for future generations. Delivering heavy civil engineering, tunnelling and complex marine infrastructure on space-limited sites in a busy capital presents an array of logistical and environmental challenges. For Tideway, our experience of delivering large-scale projects in major cities has led to innovative solutions. For example, we are fabricating significant elements of the job off site, such as the steel reinforcement cages, precast panelised river walls and the large hydraulic installation.

 

Everton Stadium FC, Liverpool

Situated on Liverpool’s world-famous waterfront, the new 52,888-seater football stadium for Everton FC will be the catalyst for the regeneration of North Liverpool. Forecasts estimate it will generate a £1.3 billion boost to the local economy, create thousands of jobs, and attract 1.4 million visitors to the city each year. Laing O’Rourke is the main contractor on the £555 million stadium and is using the power of experience held within its in-house supply chain to help efficiently deliver a hugely complex football stadium on time and in budget. 

 

Hinkley Point C, Somerset

Situated on the Somerset Coast, HPC is one of the largest and most complex projects in Europe, and when complete will power around 6 million homes with low carbon electricity. Laing O’Rourke in partnership with Bouygues TP (Bylor) is delivering the main civil engineering works at HPC worth over £2.8 billion, constructing the buildings that will house the two EPR (European Pressurised Reactor) nuclear reactors. 

 

Soho Place, London

Soho Place, one of London’s newest landmarks, sits right in the heart of the West End, arguably one of the best addresses in town. The 285,000 sq ft mixed-use scheme has brought new life to the eastern end of Oxford Street by creating its own brand-new corner of London. Drawing on our previous experience of working with Derwent London we were able to push the boundaries of modern methods of construction, embedding a Design for Manufacture & Assembly approach from the outset.

 

Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary has transformed healthcare in the region, providing patients with local, high quality acute facilities. Today, it is one of NHS Scotland’s best performing buildings in terms of hospital acquired infection rates. The High Wood Health consortium (comprising Laing O’Rourke and Aberdeen Asset Management as joint equity partners) was selected to deliver the new hospital in the spring of 2015. The new 63,000m2 hospital would replace the existing one, and be located on farmland on the outskirts of Dumfries.

 

Oxford Biochemistry Building

February 2021 saw the University of Oxford welcome a new addition to its Science Area with the completion of the 26,000m2 Oxford Biochemistry Building. Laing O’Rourke worked in collaboration with the University of Oxford Estates Services Capital Projects team and other sections of the University's Estates Services department. Our in-house supply chain saw the structures and geotechnical aspects delivered by Expanded Structures, Crown House Technologies delivered the MEP and GRCUK provided highly bespoke panels for the building’s entrances.

 

London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics

With the world watching, Laing O'Rourke – as part of the ODA's delivery partner CLM – was tasked with delivering one of the most complex feats of programme management ever undertaken. The result was the transformation of 670 acres of contaminated wasteland in Stratford into a world-class venue – delivered over the line on time and to budget. We provided programme and logistics management, first-tier delivery of construction and operational services, carrying out extensive decommissioning to deliver the facilities in both Olympic and legacy modes.
