Job Description

Building Physics is a specialist team that sits within our building engineering business line. Our Building Physics engineers support our building engineering and sustainability teams and carry out independent consultancy for a range of clients.

Alongside core Dynamic Thermal Modelling (DTM) services, including plant sizing assessments and compliance with Part O Overheating Regulations and Part L2A Building Regulations, our team delivers a broad range of building performance and sustainability services. These include LEED and ASHRAE energy modelling, NABERS UK Design for Performance schemes and TM54 operational energy assessments, passive design analysis, daylight modelling, thermal comfort and ventilation analysis, low and zero carbon technology feasibility studies, and support for the development of mixed-use masterplans.

Examples of projects the Building Physics team are involved in include:

  • Broadway - Dynamic Thermal Modelling (DTM); Planning for site, Part L Building Regulation compliance, domestic and non-domestic, Overheating of apartments, sizing, energy analysis
  • Southwark Development - DTM, Greater London Authority (GLA) Planning for site, Part L Building Regulation compliance, Part O Overheating assessments, domestic and non-domestic, TM54 Operational Energy assessments and BREEAM Passive Design Assessment.
  • Wood Wharf Phase 1 & 2 - DTM, condensation and U-value calculations, basement thermal strategy, Part L Building Regulation compliance
  • Liverpool Street Station – DTM, GLA Planning for site for an over station development and for refurbishing the existing station and a GLA Operational Energy assessments on both buildings.

Job Responsibilities:

When a graduate starts with us we pair them with an experienced modeller who will guide and mentor them through their initial period working on live projects. Training is arranged on our software modelling tool IES-VE to ensure all our building physics engineers have a full set of design skills. AECOM run a comprehensive graduate training program to develop skills in areas including clear communication and report writing, client presentation and financial management.

Early work with us involves:

  • Producing 3D geometry for buildings and developments
  • Liaising with internal and external design teams
  • Assisting in setting up comprehensive dynamic thermal models of proposed developments
  • Attending meetings and workshops with other design professionals including Architects, developers and contractors
  • Undertaking simple test cell modelling to assist with design development
  • Collating evidence for the issue of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs)
  • Undertaking calculations in various supporting software packages
  • Assisting in producing supporting information for central data bases
  • Understanding and undertaking early all types of energy calculations
  • Supporting the engineers in producing information for inclusion into the main reports
  • Assisting in production of marketing material for internal and external clients
  • Supporting the senior staff in the delivery of projects

As a graduate develops they are expected to take on more responsibility in managing our projects from inception through the design stages to completion. Graduates will regularly meet with their line manager to discuss their progress, areas of interest and plan future development activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related STEM discipline with a 2:1 classification (or equivalent) or above
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering, Building Physics or a related discipline would be an advantage
  • Experience of, or degree modules relating to, Building Physics, thermal modelling, engineering analysis and renewable energy technologies would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of the built environment and building services would be an advantage
  • Experience or knowledge of IES-VE Dynamic Thermal Modelling would be an advantage
  • Knowledge or experience of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) would be an advantage
  • Demonstrable interest in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services and developing a career in this field
  • Good Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Logical and analytical approach to identifying issues, evaluating options and developing practical engineering solutions
  • Ability to plan and organise work effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently
  • Enthusiastic, adaptable and highly motivated, with ambition and drive
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Awareness of health and safety, environmental factors and sustainability in engineering projects
