Old York Road railway bridge in Wandsworth, London has been refurbished by the Dyer & Butler team on behalf of Network Rail.
This project was to improve the existing conditions of the bridge and underpass structure which pedestrians and cyclists use regularly on their daily commutes. As a part of our Environmental Strategy, we want to positively contribute towards improving public surroundings through quality and efficiency.
With only two isolated possession slots of 27 and 52 hours, time to deliver these works was incredibly constrained.
By working collaboratively with our partners: CC Infrastructure, Armadillo Lighting, Cobra Traffic Management (Cobra ™), Four Tees, AC Construction and Skill Scaffold, the works were completed.
The bridge had corroded steel deck plates, flow forge and four-foot timber walkways which were replaced with glass reinforced plastic (GRP) panels. These are significantly lighter and sturdier which allows more sunlight to pass through, as well as reduce health and safety risks to the public.
The walls surrounding the underpass were stripped down and jet washed, removing years of pollution and algae and the panels were painted, smartening up the streetscape.
As a part of our Safety Strategy, it’s important that we create an environment that is safe for all. We introduced a new multi-coloured lighting system which was installed in the underpass for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists at night.
Dyer & Butler Site Manager, Alexander Glanfield, said: “This was a joint project on behalf of the Council and Network Rail, refurbishing the underpass area with high political priority. The drive to a successful delivery of this project, was achieved due to great communication, co-ordination, and collaboration from all parties, not just through our suppliers, but from the sponsors and clients. A real example of what can be achieved when everyone collectively strives for the same goal.”
