South Wales Police is the largest police force in Wales and serves 42% of the population. We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, across an area of about 800 square miles from Swansea to Merthyr Tydfil to our capital city, Cardiff.

About the role

An exciting opportunity is on offer for a graduate level internship within the Police Liaison Unit (PLU), supporting Policing in Wales in their work with UK and Welsh Governments and other key stakeholders.

The 12 month role will support the team’s Analyst/Policy Officer in vital work across some key priority areas for policing, including tackling violence against women and girls and working towards an anti-racist Wales.

The successful applicant will support the development of data dashboards that will measure progress against key objectives that will inform discussions and decision makers within policing and wider criminal justice partners.

Applicants will be IT literate with well developed skills in the range of Microsoft Office products, in particular Excel. The role will involve the extraction, cleansing and presentation of data for inclusion in a range of performance dashboards, as well as providing data to support other reports. Main Responsibilities

Advice and Guidance

  • Give advice and guidance to customers, on the phone, face-to-face and electronic, on related area of work following standard procedures.
  • Look at frequent communication issues and provide appropriate advice.
  • Provide adequate support to the team and customers as directed.
  • Interacting with and pro-actively supplying information to project leads.
  • May involve taking and/or advising on appropriate action within remit.
  • May involve responding to escalated queries from members of the public.

Organisation/Planning

  • Plan and organise allocated own work.
  • Co-ordinate with other team members.
  • Contribute to team and departmental plan.
  • To organise and schedule events/meetings as directed.

People Management

  • Manage work coming into the team and raise and escalate when appropriate.

Processes

  • Adapt and refine work practices and procedures in own area.
  • To follow, create, amend, look at quality processes for use by self and others.

Customer Service and Representation

  • To present a positive image and service to both internal and external customers
  • Individuals are required to effectively engage with internal and external customers at all levels, in order to provide a high quality standard of service
  • Maintain confidentiality in relation to data protection issues and
  • Management Of Police Information (MOPI) standards

In addition, the post holder must be prepared to undertake such additional duties which may result from changing circumstances, but which may not of necessity, change the general character or level of responsibility of the post.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Must be working towards a degree or an equivalent qualification and have successfully completed the first year [Level 4] in a relevant subject. Relevant subjects may include, but are not limited to:
    • Statistics
    • Mathematics
    • Computer Science
    • Criminology

Skills

Essential

  • Must be computer literate and proficient in Microsoft applications.
  • Must be aware of the need for confidentiality in the use of data.

Desirable

  • Awareness of the provision of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)
  • Welsh Language Level 2 - Can understand the essence of a conversation in Welsh, and can convey basic information and respond to simple requests in Welsh. Can use Welsh to transfer telephone calls.
  • Can introduce oneself and others by name, role, and location/organisation. Can contribute in a meeting partly in Welsh.
