Graduate Quantity Surveyor

What did you study at university?

BSc Mathematics with Business Studies joint honours

What do you currently do at MM?

I am an Assistant Quantity Surveyor

What made you want to apply for a Grad role with MM?

Motts is a global company which meant if I wanted to relocate in the future it would be easier to do whilst remaining as part of the Motts family. In addition I was particularly impressed by the inclusiveness and how welcome the company is to Women in construction.

What’s the most interesting work you’ve been involved in so far?

I have been seconded to work for a client, United Utilities and I have been working in the pre-contract team helping improve the water that flows through the North of England!

How has your degree come in useful in your work?

My degree involved business studies which has helped me in developing client-relations, it has prepared me to work in the commercial side of business such as managing/forming contracts, leading/presenting and also in stakeholder relations. The mathematics side of my degree has helped me in working with Excel, in calculations and also maintaining that problem solving mind-set which studying maths really instils in you.

Have you been involved with anything in addition to your day job (for instance, involvement with the networks, social committee etc) and what does that involve?

I am proudly part of the Muslim community at Mott MacDonald where I have been regularly joining weekly calls with other Muslims within Mott MacDonald such as during Ramadan where they arranged a webinar to spread awareness to non-Muslim staff at Motts of what the holy month means to Muslims and I also attended the Eid lunch they conducted, I have been preparing Newsletters for the framework team from Motts that work for United Utilities and I am also part of the Sports and Social Committee for the Motts framework staff working for United Utilities where I had a hand in planning for the last Christmas event.

What development opportunities have you had? How has MM supported you in this?

I have been supported by MM to start my Chartership journey with RICS as they have not only covered the cost of my Chartership but they have a great support network for this on Teams where they arrange sessions to aid my learning and provide me with mentor/supervisors. There has also been several workshops and Grad course days for the graduates on the Accelerating your Future Programme where it has been insightful and incredibly useful in helping hone us into the business professionals holding MM values at heart.

What one piece of advice would you give to anyone looking to apply for the Grad scheme?

I would not blink twice when an opportunity for a Grad scheme arises with MM as it is a wonderful chance to join a growing family, a successful and expansive business where the opportunities are endless. You will be supported throughout your career and you will never want to leave! The one advice I give to anyone looking to apply for the Graduate scheme is to read on the Motts websites of all the unique projects and core values that makes Motts shine from its competitors. One endearing project I can recommend reading on is the Bridges to Prosperity in Rwanda which showcases how MM are a caring and philanthropist organisation.
