Joe May

Graduate Flood Risk Specialist

What is your role at Mott MacDonald?

I am a Graduate Flood Risk Specialist, working within the Water Consultancy Division in the Brighton office.

What are you most proud of from your time at Mott MacDonald?

When I was asked for advice by a member of the mechanical engineering team regarding a Flood Risk Assessment for a project that I wasn’t working on. It was very satisfying having someone ask for my advice, and to know I had gained enough experience to answer the question confidently.

How has working for Mott MacDonald helped you career progression?

Mott MacDonald has offered professional training through the graduate scheme, whilst I have also partaken in role specific Flood Modelling courses. I’ve found there is a lot of support within the company for professional development, especially with regards to chartership.

As this is my first professional job, I’ve found working at Mott MacDonald has helped me expand upon and develop the skills I learned at university. My analytical and problem-solving skills have greatly improved, whilst I have also refined my report writing.

What was it like switching to formal employment after University?

I came straight into working at Mott MacDonald after graduating, and the switch was made easier by both my buddy and line manager. The buddy system is a great way to ease into working, having someone that you can easily ask questions of, no matter how big or small!

My line manager has been supportive and constructive with helping me adjust to formal employment, providing guidance whenever needed. I’ve also found that everyone, no matter their level of experience, is happy to help with answering questions or giving advice.

What is the work life balance like at Mott MacDonald?

I’ve found the work life balance to be great! People working on projects will never expect answers to queries/work to be completed outside of designated work hours, and the resourcing is well balanced. Additionally, there is a Sports and Socials committee in my office, which offers a range of extracurricular activities that take place outside of work.

What advice would you give to someone applying to work at Mott MacDonald?

I’d recommend having a good look at the Mott MacDonald website and reading about projects we work on that really interest you. Having a good understanding and a genuine passion for the work we do will make your application stand out from others. Tailor your application to show how the skills you’ve developed in previous employment or at university will make you a key part of the team.
