Your career at Alfa

As a graduate at Alfa it’s important for you to understand the whole Alfa lifecycle: the product, Alfa Systems, how it works, and also know how our clients use the product and how it supports them. We believe that to be a great software engineer, you need to have a good understanding of how our clients use and apply our software. And to be a great implementation consultant, you need to have a good understanding of the software functionality and how it supports our clients with their business needs.

So, during the two year graduate programme you will gain experience in different parts of the business to help you build knowledge in both developing the product (Engineering) and delivering Alfa projects to our clients (Implementation).

About Life as a Software Engineer
As a Junior Software Engineer, some of the work you will be involved is in designing and developing software and functionality as required by our clients, testing that all software and solutions work and providing support to clients throughout the go-live process and into the future.

As a new joiner, you will receive close supervision and training that will give you a firm basis for your future. During the initial training programme, which lasts around 10-12 weeks, you will get to grips with developing and configuring Alfa Systems, while building up knowledge of the product, the industry and our ways of working at Alfa.

After week one where you will learn all about our company, culture and how we operate as a business, you will then start getting to grips with the fundamentals of coding in Java, how our product (Alfa Systems) works and how our clients use it. After this, you will move to our technical ”Java bootcamp” phase of induction for around 6 weeks, which will get you up to speed with the coding skills you will need to be a great Software Engineer or Analyst.

After training, you will then join Product Engineering (working as a Junior Software Engineer) or a client project team (working as an Analyst). After your first placement, which can be anywhere from 6-12 months in length, you will then rotate and spend time in the other area.

As a Junior Software Engineer, some of the work you will be involved in is in designing and developing software and functionality as required by our clients, testing that all software and solutions work and providing support to clients throughout the go-live process and into the future.

As an Analyst on a client project, as well as the design and development of the software, you will also need to modify business processes to ensure the client is working as effectively as possible, test that everything works, transfer all the data from the old system to Alfa Systems, and provide support through the go-live process and into the future.

Your career at Alfa will build and grow as you gain knowledge in the different areas. We will work with you towards the end of the graduate programme to understand what career path is best for you to go down.

A good Alfa recruit has the ability to see an end goal, break down the steps to get there, and put in the effort to achieve it. Therefore, any hard-working and ambitious graduate can be successful as long as they  have a logical mind, enjoy working as part of a team, have pride in their work, and see their career immersed in the worlds of both technology and finance. With our ever-increasing geographic reach, knowledge of foreign languages is an added bonus, and we’ll even support you if you want to pursue extra studies.
